I went to watch my R2 copy of Terminator this evening and to my horrow both of the disk in the box are completely useless. They both look as if they are covered with condensation but its all between the layers.

If anybody has the disk it may well be worth checking.

Yeah, R2 of Terminator is in the list with a chance of DVD rot.. bad batch or something.

Owned the DVD for more than a year?

Order another Terminator... and claim it's faulty... guess what you have to do :)

Oh check Contact R2 as well... that's another one that fails alot

Just checked my Terminator and it's the same. Found on another site, you have to call 0800 3898384 for full instructions on how to claim your replacement.

The helpline also said that this may effect Silence Of The Lambs discs. My SOTL is R1, so should be OK.

Just checked my disc and disc 1 does look like the pictures from that site where as disc 2 seems find. I am going to lay the cd where the layer changes.
Is there anything I could have done to prevent it?

sent mine off two weeks ago, waiting for them to come back. The scariest part is where you have to return it too, all you have to write on the parcel is "FREEPOST DVD RETURNS"!!!!!!! No other address details!

Sent mine back on Saturday, after ringing the 'if you've not heard anything for 28 days' number. Spoke to a chap there who said that it takes about 7-10 days for the discs to arrive via the freepost address, then about another 7 days, for new ones to be sent out. I sent my Terminator and SotL discs back, but he did say that they were awaiting new stock of one of the titles (sorry, can't remember which:blush: )

One thing though, he was most insistent that the address was 'FREEPOST, DVD RETURN' not RETURNS (plural) as that seems to make difference. Maybe he was just being pedantic.....

When (if) mine come back, I'll post here.

    Sorry, Gary,
That wasn't my intention, just an observation. When I rang the freefone number, the address wasn't to clear, that's why I checked. I can't see what difference it would make. Perhaps a Royal Mail employee can enlighten us?
In any case, If your discs (or mine for that matter) don't turn up, I don't see how MGM can argue you've never sent them. After all, they did not ask for them to be sent recorded delivery.
    We'll see. Keep us posted.

Posted out on the Monday - new disks back on the Thursday.

I've just checked my R2 copy of T1 & it's almost unplayable. I'm not bothered how long they take to replace mine, I'm more concerned the replacement discs will go the same as the original ones after a couple of years. Has anyone got replacement discs that have gone cloudy after a short period of time?

Checked mine today after reading this thread, and guess what?
Both discs were a right mess and unplayable.
I contacted HMV where I originally bought the disc. Upon speaking to staff I quickly found out that they were aware of the problem and told me I could have a replacement. Got both discs replaced the same day, no problems at all. Beats waiting for disc to arrive via the post!

Did you need proof of purchase? If not, credit to HMV for dealing with a known problem sensibly, rather than making us poor consumers jump through hoops, as so often happens when things go wrong.

No proof was required. I explained that I bought the disc when it was first released and had obviously disposed of the receipt.

I have to hand it to HMV I thought they were excellent!

    Guys,

I checked my R2 copies of Terminator and Silence of the Lambs a while ago when i first heard about this.

Both had the look of condensation and were sticky to the touch. Fortunately, both appeared to play okay but i thought i'd give them the once over with some Windowlene spray.

Guess what... my discs now look like all the rest in my collection... smear free and non-sticky!

I actually did this a while ago and the smearing and stickiness has never returned... and my discs still play okay.

    Hope that helps.

    Pete.

I cleaned mine last year as well. The residue came back:(
That's why I finally decided to return the discs whilst the offer of replacement is still on.

Mine came back from MGM this morning  They dont just send the disc though - they sent me a new box as well, so i now have two Terminator boxes, one cardboard and one amray case. They said that the problem is due to the combination of inks used on the DVD labels and bad storage conditions.

    Well done MGM.

Checked my T2 and Silence of the lambs last night, Both T2 discs are scrap, and SOTL has started to go, but will still play. Tried taking them back today (smiths), but they didn't want to know, so I guess I'll be going the MGM route.

    Hi All,

I had the rot problem on the original gold dvd disc T1 'special edition' release.

No problem, got in touch with MGM, and sent the discs off to them, had them back in a week.

As already stated, poor ink, poor quality glue to glue the layers together & poor storage conditions, started the rot.

So at least they did own up to the fault, as they denied all knowledge about it in the first place.

    I hope this helps

    Cheers

All mail addressed Freepost Dvd Return will be sent to Birmingham Mail Center and then sent on to the company. This is a service offered by Royal Mail to companies for dealing with their mail. There might be more than one company using the service for returning faulty DVD.

Another example user of this service is You've Been Framed on ITV 1: people are asked to send thier videos to Freepost You've Been Framed.

apparantly the "rot" is actually layer of condensation between the data layer and the outer layer, caused by poor production and storage.

:) My replacement Terminator and SotL discs turned up this morning. The Terminator was in the new amaray case with insert and sleeve, while SotL was in an amaray with no insert or sleeve:confused:
Never mind at least I can watch them now.

I sent my terminator off a couple of days ago - I hope they do send me a replacement in an amray case with artwork because I much prefer amray cases (originally it came with a cardboard case which i still have).
