TEAC Reference 701-Series, dare to be different

By Jasper Bol, Brand Operations Manager at

TEAC is a well-known and regarded Japanese manufacturer of audio solutions with a rich track record of more than 65 years in both professional studio equipment and premium to high-end consumer electronics. End of 2021 TEAC presented the new Reference 701-Series with the UD-701N USB DAC/Network Player/Preamplifier and the AP-701 power amplifier that form the new flagships of the TEAC Reference line-up. The concept of the TEAC Reference line-up is to offer a full blown and very musical sound experience on a smaller footprint. The use of premium materials, unique techniques inherited from both the professional Tascam brand and the high-end Esoteric brand ( both part of TEAC Corporation ) combined with a very distinct and premium design makes these products easy to blend into domestic surroundings and have the best sound money can offer.

The TEAC UD-701N represents the new top model among TEAC's network players. This all-round device combines a high-quality DAC, network player, analog preamplifier and fully balanced high-end headphone amplifier which results in an audiophile ‘Swiss-knife’ for every audio setup. Instead of a generic DAC IC, it accommodates a newly developed unique TEAC ΔΣ (Delta Sigma) discrete DAC, which consists of discrete circuits and uses an FPGA with original TEAC algorithms. DSD signals are transmitted unaltered, while PCM signals are transmitted after passing through a ΔΣ-modulator and conversion to 1-bit signals. The result: a perfectly clear sound field, thanks specifically to the discrete design. The popular AAC, Qualcomm aptX and SBC codecs are also supported, so high-quality wireless playback of music is also possible via mobile devices and digital audio players.

This advanced all-around unit fascinates every audiophile as the core of an audio system.

Just like the UD-701N, the AP-701 Power Amplifier is a special beast. With two toroidal core power supply transformers and two sound-tuned Hypex Ncore modules, the extravagant circuitry has a complete dual mono structure from input to output. A dual mono structure, in which the channels are each completely mono, prevents interference between the left and right signals and achieves outstanding channel separation. Together with the power of 2x260Watt / 4 Ohm and 2x170W / 8 Ohm this enables rich audio reproduction that provides a larger sound stage and more tree dimensional sound.

As mentioned in Lowbeats recent review:

The results can be summed up surprisingly quickly. The team TEAC UD-701-N and AP-701 impresses with a tremendously powerful and at the same time very "smooth" sound…The technical and mechanical effort TEAC has put into the UD-701N streaming preamplifier, and the AP-701 power amplifier is paying off in terms of sound. In their price range, TEACs are comparable to the best of their kind. In addition, there is the great finish with an independent and visually impressive look. Really convincing and a value not to be underestimated is the integrated headphone amplifier, which in the class up to about 800 euros can easily compete with separate DAC/KHVs.

With the TEAC Reference 701-Series the company shows to be unique, dares to be different and follows their own path. But never at the loss of sound quality which is the top priority in every TEAC Reference product.

The official TEAC store in Europe can be found here at the EU TEAC ONLINE STORE
where you will find all technical details and specs to help your decision.

For anyone providing us with high quality pictures of your TEAC installation at home, that makes it into our social media feed, we offer a 50 GPB cash-back or will donate 100 GBP to a charity of your choice.

And finally… our Limited Edition 'Recording Tomorrow' Competition:

The new product release isn't all you'll be treated to at High End. In early March, we partnered up with gigmit to launch a one-of-a-kind project under our motto of "Recording Tomorrow". We asked artists to submit their best music to us for a chance to be featured on a limited edition custom-made TEAC vinyl record. We received almost 400 entries and with great difficulty managed to narrow it down to 22 finalists. Of those 22, six will be awarded one of the highly desired spots on the album. The winners will be announced at High End.

It could be yours!
We are giving away copies to 10 lucky TEAC fans. For a chance to win, listen to the playlist, follow us on Facebook and comment your favourite tune on our corresponding social post. This is your only chance to own one of the exclusive records as they won't be for sale anywhere.

Had my UD-701N since new year and it lives up to the promotional hype to my ears. Recently added the CG10M master clock, which, despite the scepticism towards such devices, raises the bar a little higher.
caveat: not heard any other competitors, delta/sigma, ladder or chip based and probably never will.
@TEAC Corp I've been trying to buy a UD-701N, but your UK distribution appears to be completely broken, your web site is disabled for UK customers, your link to 'shipping delays to the UK' tells me I don't have access to that page and it's impossible to ask a question of you because your contact form requires either a webshop order number or a serial number for tech support. Yes, the stupidity of Brexit isn't your fault, but your inability to communicate with customers in the UK is. Very disappointing.
