    Hey guys, having decided on the Sony STR-DB70 reciever, I have finally choosen between 5.1 and 2.1 speakers...

    My room isn't that big, and initially I was thinking of getting the Mission FS1 speaker package.

    However, having read through many threads on this forum concerning FS1/2 and their musicical playback abilities; I have now decided it would be best to spend money on two excellent front speakers. With the option of buying a centre, rears and a sub in the future...

    For the speakers my budget is around £200. I was initially thinking of Mission M33's, however it seems Tannoy R2's would be better...

    So looking around for prices, I saw that super fi have them for £339.95, and empiredirect have them for £218.41. I am missing something? Are they different?

    Would these speakers be okay with the STR-DB790? And could I get away without a sub until more funds become more available?

    Cheers

    PS Also what speaker cable would be best? QED Silver £5 p/m?

    www.petertyson.co.uk also has some good Tannoy prices. The Revolution range is to be discontinued soon hence the lower prices now available.

    Thanks for that mate, although empiredirect's is the cheapest I have seen, and they currently offer free delivery on them...

    Are they good for the price mate? Much better than the M33's?

    These speakers will work just fine with your Sony amp, and a sub, although desirable won't be necessary.

    Hi I recently changed my mission m73 front speakers to the tannoy r2and find them better than the mission .I still have my mission center which is a better match to the tannoy speakers, strange but true. Have not heard the m33 but the tannoy are a good buy at the moment.

    If you didn't allready know remove the covers for the first few weeks.The cabinets darken up and you will get uneven shading with the covers on.

    Cheers Bob, I think I prefer them without the covers anyway :)

    Can these speakers be bi-wired?

    I recommend bi-wiring them as it improved the sound of my R3's.

    Thanks JIT, how do bi-wire's differ when connecting them to an amp/receiver? I understand the speaker end will have 4 wires, but does the amp/receiver end mirror this?

    Cheers

    I have also choosen to use QED Silver Anniversary Bi-Wire, the price is not a concern as the R2's will only sit around 6 feet from the receiver...

    Richer Sounds out of stock though :(

    On a broader not about connecting my whole system.

    This is my first system, so I just want to make sure of the best way to connect everything...

    TV: Sony 28FX68
    DVD: Sony NS305 (upgraded soon)
    RECEIVER: Sony STRDB790
    SPEAKERS: Tannoy R2's

    Currently the DVD player is hooked up to AV1 (rgb) with an IXOS £40 scart lead; I assume this remains as is.

    The DVD player has phono output into my Sony hi-fi amp, using awful phone leads. The TV is connected to the amp in the same way.

    So for my new setup can I assume:

    TV -> AMP with good phono ( Ixos 104-1M shortlisted ) £15
    DVD -> AMP with good coaxial ( Ixos XHA203-100 shortlisted ) £17

    I then hope to add a standalone CD player, which I can connect thus:

    CD -> AMP with good optical ( Ixos 105-1M shortlisted ) £23

    XBOX -> AMP with good optical?

    Not right away mate, my room is a weird shape...

    It would be difficult for me to fit two rear speakers, unless they are stand/wall mounted; thats why I initially was going to buy the less superior Mission FS1's. However music playback is as important as film performance...

    However I do eventually want a 5.1 setup, do you have anything in mind mate?

    I have 4 banana plugs at the speaker end of the cable and at the amp end i have 2 banana plugs with the 2 +ve and 2 -ve cables in 1 plug each which then goes into the relevent socket.

    Normally people stick to the same manufacturer for the center and rear speakers.You could try the rest of the tannoy range,i'm thinking of changing my rears next year from mission m7ds to something else .Don't know what yet but i've never been 100% satisfied with the missions ,this is more likely to be the location rather than the speakers.
