I have now replaced my front aego t set up with a pair of F4's and the F1 centre custom tannoy speakers. all i can say is that its a massive difference compared to the aego t sats that were there previously.

even though i do not have a sub the F4's give such a deep resonance that it sounds better than my aego set up ever sounded even with the subwoofer.

my question relates to 2 things.

first do i remove the padding from the front of the speakers - why is it there and what does it do.

secondly will i see any advantage in biamping, biwiring the fronts. i only use the set up for movies and games. if i should biamp etc then which is better biamping or biwiring. My onkyo 705 allows me to biamp by linking the back surrounds to the low level speaker inputs.

The foam wadding is there partly for protection during shipping etc.....the tannoy leaflet suggests you CAN keep it there, depending on the size of your room...But i'd say remove them regardless. The bass felt slightly more tight with them in, but i'd say there was a lack of real low down grunt.

As for actaully taking them out....tweezers worked well for me, or long noze pliers.

Bi-wiring them will see little or NO improvement.....Bi-amping depends on the "bi-amp" function of your amp.....try it and see !

Give them a while to run in by the way...mine sounded much better after a few weeks

I just myself received delievery of a pair of F4 and the FC centre and just finished wiring them all up and yes, "WOW!" That's all i can say....

Anyone thinking about upgrading and have a budget of £250 should really consider doing this...especially if you want big detailed sound but are limited with space.

Need to change my tag now!

i've bi-amped mine, not done a compare to see if i could tell any difference but i'm only running a 5 speaker set-up so no point not to really

May I ask what you would call limited with space?

The reason for my question is this: My room is only 11 ft X 9ft

I have a 9ft spread across the front speakers and I'm seated 9ft from the screen. Is that to little space for these speakers?

I currently have Eltax symphony with a mis matched JPW center.

    Tony :)

Right I want in on the Tannoy F4 love fest lol

I got mine for £290 for the 5.0 set up

They sounded good when wired up then I took the foam bungs out and wow amazing is all I can say but wait after a couple of days they just got better and I was sat there with huge amounts of bass, clear mid and spine tingling treble I’m so happy I went in and on impulse purchased them

These are not my first speakers I’ve had MS 906i (Loved them sooooo much) and a pair of Mission M32i’s they were also very good but I like the big sound of the F4s – I can’t wait to wire up the rest as I’ve only got the front 2 channels working at the moment

I can only imagine the other two and the centre working in stereo and I’ve got a MS 309 to go into the mix too 

    Rant mode off

    Hi Tony

Our room measures 4 meters wide by 6 long and the ceilings are about 3 meters high. The room available might sound quite big but it's the shape and positioning of the speakers that causes us problems. 9ft x 11ft will be fine in my humble opinion!

Same as me lad....impulse buy, no demo.......plugged them in and was instantly taken away.

They HAVE renewed my love for music, no question.....Ive gone out and bought a deep pile rug for the middle of my living room, and reguarly enjoy lying on the floor, with a glass of wine, and listening to some of my favs.....And, i'll tell you a GREAT track to listen on the f4's.....Jimi hendrix, all along the watchtower......

Im sure bass junky will agree that there is no chance of beating the f4's in that price range, I.e sub 300 for 5 channels....

IN fact, im off for a listen now

    Hi

I agree you can't beat the value but even at the higher price at RS and Superfi they are still great and there's not much out there for the price that can do the same job new

I tried some old CD's and I could hear things that I didn't know were there!

If I upgrade I will have to go for something special like the B&W 683 etc but not for a very long time lol

    yip.

The simon and garf. collection proved that too me.

Upgrade for me will be a long way off.

Richer sounds offered me 5 years warranty for £12 a set for the floorstanders....So i took it.

Found out today that Tannoy give 5 years themselves......so i'll be calling Richersound for a £24 refund, with which i will buy a large tbone steak, a bottle of red, and a new CD for 2morrow night......Perhaps the who, or pink floyd.

I'm loving the F4 love in the room!
I'm jet waiting for mine to arrive. I ordered the F4 customs for fronts, the FC centre, and a pair of the F1's as rears, with stands. They'll be running as 5.0 from a Sony STG820 amp. I decided to go sub-less as my AV room is in the converted attic, and I was fearful that the bass would tear through the whole house, and the neighbours too...

I just had a couple of questions:
    1) Does anyone know if I could use the 2 unused channels of the Sony amp to Bi-amp the F4s or is it not that flexible? Instructions and the Sony site give no clue so I suspect it's a no.
    2) should my rears be at the sides pointing inwards, or behind pointing forwards, or somewhhere in between?

Sorry to go off topic. I can't wait now, I'll add to the love when mine arrive. :)

If u are refering to the A+B front channels....NO, they are powered by the same amp....and the 2 extra channels from 7.1 can't be used either.

I have the 820...its a great entry level amp....you'll struggle to beat it for the money...

My rears point fowards, purely because of their location, but i dare say they'd sound better pointing inwards slightly....

Best way...Try both, and listen. !

    Hi

So how is everyone doing with their F4s?

I'm still running mine in stereo mode and they have run in now and it's the best money I've spent in a long time!

I haven't even connected my sub that's how good the bass is - on the new pussycat dolls song (I know I know) the bass was so strong that I could feel my bed moving closer to the speaker so I turned it up and the bass threw me at the wall a great way to wake up I thought lol

They're getting very hard to find at reasonable prices now.
I've got one set on order for £165 which don't look like they're going to turn up now, and a second set off of ebay which have been delayed a week and a half for some reason.....

As of a few minutes ago they were still being listed in Richer Sounds

Richer Sounds - The UK's Hi-Fi, Home Cinema & Flat Panel Tv Specialists!

    " CLEARANCE BARGAINS! LONDON BROMLEY
    LONDON BROMLEY

    020 8466 6565

    48 East Street, Bromley, Kent, BR1 1QW "

At ... £119.95 ... I'd buy a pair myself at that price if I lived in London. :D

One pair left ... don't all rush off at once.

Love for the F4's is still strong, like a freshly courting couple......i wonder if things will still be sweet in a years time.......when we all realise they were dirt cheap due to woodworm !!!!

I'm still overcome by the finish.....given the price anyway....i still say Tannoy should have done them in black...Gloss AND matt.....

I bought another tannoy centre speaker, its going in my kitchen....havent decided how to wire it yet......

So nice and easy to find and available then......
I checked in store last Friday, and they showed that they were out of stock Nationwide then. One pair does not "an easy find" make.

Well you can easily - all right , by accident whilst looking for something else  - find them at the Peter Tyson outlet on e bay at £300 ... but I had supposed that people wouldn't be happy to find them easily at that price! Mind you they do have Two pairs of " Tannoy Mercury F4 Custom Speakers - Dark Oak finish " available.

I seem to recall that they are front ported and so it might be manageable. It all depends on your rooms layout really but if you can get F4 s at a bargain price it might be worth the risk ... at the Richer Sounds price I'd chance it to replace the little Tannoy Bookcase speakers that I have in my bedroom at either side of a chest of drawers and a few inches away from the wall that faces my bed. Nothing wrong with my little speakers, I really have been very pleased with them, but .. what the Hell ! Why not? :D

    Must add my love too!!!

I ended up paying a little more as i got 2 pairs of F4s and FC in dark oak from superfi i also bought a keff kube 1 sub, a Denon1909 and loads of cables lol did end up with a £150 discount though.

The only doubt i have is with the sub as i'm not to impressed but need to have a play with the settings. The Tannoys though sound great without the sub on when i'm playing Fifa09 on the PS3.

    Dear k13 wjd,

In the UK the retailer is legally responsible to its customers and we give a 12 month guarantee on everything to facilitate this, with a fully refundable if not used (i.e. free), five year warranty on all speakers, electronics as well as many other categories

If manufacturers wish to offer different terms then that it fine with us and customers end up with the best of both worlds.

Of course, if you are unhappy with the terms of our warranty then we will happily offer a full refund. Please let me know if this is the case and I will arrange this for you.

    I hope this clarifies things.

    Yours sincerely,

    John Clayton
    Operations Director

I've claimed back my money on the Richer Sounds 5 Year warranty a couple of times and I can confirm that the procedure has been straightforward .. you just hand over the documentation and the Richers Sales Person cancels the warranty and gives you the money.

On a point of clarification of the 5 year warranty for the F4 s.

I've noticed that my Tannoy Mercury Custom Speakers Manufacturers warranty states that ' all passive components are guaranteed for a period of 5 years from the date of purchase from an authorized Tannoy dealer .. all active and electronic components are guaranteed for a period of one year from the date of purchase ... " there are the usual provisos about miss use. You'd better make due allowance for my tired Typos and transcription of small print. :)

It may well be that the F4 s are covered in the same way. Indeed all Tannoy speakers may well be covered by their 5 year warranty on the same terms but ... does the Richer Sounds 5 year Warranty cover more than the Tannoy warranty?

I do wonder how Tannoy define ' passive ' components as well as whats in the very fine print in the Richer Warranty ... its a bit late to try to find my old magnifying glass. :D

Anyway the Richer 5 year warranty is worth it for the sake of peace of mind and I must remember to claim back the warranty money from my old, soon to be sold, Samsung 1400 Blue Ray player.

    Regards,

    Arnold.

PS. I'd better state that I have no connection with Richer Sounds or any staff member of Richer Sounds other than that of an ordinary long term customer.

    Hi

I don't know what it is about these speakers but they are sounding even better - this week it's like they broke in again the treble is much better and the bass is hard hitting

Amazing just amazing and to say I'm using a Yamaha AV amp I can't wait to get my NAD stereo amp
