    Hi,

Just got the quote for the DAB module for my T32R, 695£. I'm considering this, but there's a doubt, and now is weekend, so no IAG helpdesk: what is the max bitrate this board can handle? I believe DAB transmissions can go up to 256kbit/s, and the maximum being currently used in Portugal is 224kbit/s, for a classical station.

Can TAG's DAB module take these rates? A guy from one of the DAB stations here told me that only the so-called 3rd-generation DAB tuners could get equal or more than 192.

    Help?

    Luis

I'd be very astonished if that were the case, because bitrates up to 384kbp/s have been part of the DAB standard forever.

    Hi,

i can only speak for germany, but the problem here is that we have´nt
enough band capacity to use higher bitrates until the conventional
"terrestial broadcast" is occuping the facillities.

I hope you understand my terrible english

    Greetings

    Alfredo

    Hi,

here is a specification from the TagML white papers:

    6.3. DAB data rates
DAB single multiplex contains many DAB radio stations combined into one block, with the overall data rate being 1.7 Mbit/s. The number of stations within a multiplex will determine the maximum data rate available for each station. The multiplex is flexible however, so some stations (such as news programmes) may get transmitted with lower data rates (and hence lower sound quality), while others (such as classical concerts) may get transmitted with higher data rates.

The standard data rate from a stereo CD is 1.4 Mbit/s. However, using the MPEG Audio Layer 2 compression algorithm (as used in DAB), field studies with data rates of 192 kBit/s have shown barely discernable differences between the compressed and original audio data. This is now the most common transmission data rate for DAB audio programmes.

I did´nt find something about higher datarates, but Hartmut and I were
shure about that 384 kBit/s were possible.

But the Radiostation prefer to transmit three or four programms with
lower datarate, then one with the highest. :(

    Greetings Alfredo

    Hi.
We used to transmit 256kbps, however those days are long gone due to having to squeeze "quarts into pint pots"...... a 192kbps R3 concert is about as good as it gets these days until something gets turned off alowing larger pipes.......

    Olá Luis,

My I ask you how many and which stations are available on DAB in Portugal at the moment. I have just moved all my TAG gear to Lisbon and since my AV32DP has a DAB card it would be nice if I could do something useful with it.

I am quite tempted to buy a T32R and move the card into it, but I am not sure I can justify it $$$, since the T20 I own is already a nice radio for what I need.

    Regards
    Pedro

    Olá Pedro,

There's only five, actually: Antena 1, Antena 2, Antena 3, Africa and RDP Internacional, all belonging to RDP.

That's it, but suposedly, until 2010, all stations should migrate to DAB, since coverage is 100% as of the end of 2004, Madeira and Açores until 2007.

    Luis
