    Hi All,

I know I'm supposed to be broke but I've been offered a good deal on a new Tag McLaren DVD32FLR and I'm very tempted.

I'll hopefully get the chance to see it fired up at the Bristol show tomorrow but in the meantime, I'd be very interested in your opinions.

    Principle questions are:

    1) Is it worth it?
    2) How good is it?
    3) How good is the PSM192?

Aside from that, I'd love to hear from owners/former owners/dealers/installers who have experience with it.

    TIA,

    D.

Will your display support PS? If not, then I don't see how the module will make your display better than interlaced.

    Hi Nathan,

I believe so; I'd have to check first though. The plan is to buy the DVD32FLR first and then add the PSM192 as funds allow (never?). If the Panny doesn't support PS, I'd just stick with the basic DVD32FLR until I upgrade the display.

I'll ask about the Panny in the Plasma forum.

Whoops! I thought that Panny was a 42" RP.

Plasma can support PS, either use the Plasma's own, or the DVD players own decoder (which ever better)

TAG DVD32FLR is a very nice machine David.

Excellent picture & TAG's usual standard of build quality.
Very capable with CD's & has great connectivity.
Uses the Silicon image de-interlacer which is rather cool, so the PSM upgrade to a compatible display will be recommended when the coffers are full.

From what i saw @ Bristol (taking into context the conditions etc - & i may have missed other players),
the DVD32FLR was the best DVD picture on show (hooked upto Plasma)..

So, it is up there with the best DVD players available.

    Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Adzman: What are Tag demoing at Bristol? I'm going over tomorrow principally to see Tag. If they have a DVD32FLR up and running, I'll be made up. I thought they'd just have a DVD32R with PSM192 and VS2048 which would be a bit out of my league.

Funnily enough David, i didn't actually visit the TAG room.
Anthony Gallo room had a TAG DVD32FLR, AVR32 & 100X5R plus a plasma, so that's where i saw the TAG in action.

I prefer to demo manufacturers new kit @ my dealers as he has a pretty good demo room....

I have seen it in action @ my dealer's & the pic is one of the very best you can get..

Cant see you being anything but impressed.

    David

Tag are demoing the AV192 complete with all the top of the range speakers and amps onto a barco Cine 9. Have to say, despite not really being a Tag fan they had the best demo at the show.

It's worth sticking you head in the Owl video room, they have the best panel projector at the show. I only had to stick my head into most rooms to see the 'rainbow's' but the HT300+ is pretty impressive, colour balance was off but none the less a very impressive picture.

    Hi All,

M'bird and I just got back from Bristol and after visiting the Gallo room (thanks for the tip Adzman), we've decided to go ahead. We can't afford it but the deal we've been offered is too good (but not that good if you're reading this Tony, don't get cocky).

I have to buy it now, we bought a BNC-BNC component video lead while we were there which is useless to us otherwise.

Well, he didn't ask about Meridian did he:devil: ;) :)

I genuinely think the DVD32FLR is a class bit of kit.

I tested the DV32R at home for a week against my Arcam DV88 and couldnt tell the difference (mainly tested CDs). Should be able to find my thread, from a few weeks ago.

None of the 'this is an amazing player' crowd responded really.

I love the DVD32R and would been happy to part with the money for it had it actually sounded better :)

I agree.. they go from very nice looking av32r and dvd32r to the av192r and dvd32flr.. what happened? the designer left the company? Its like they put no effort into the looks at all.

When one is paying £3000 for a DVD Player, there is a certain logic that dictates the machine will be aesthetically pleasing. Indeed, I would take it for granted.

The Tag DVD32r is very nice aesthetically and a great industrial design. The front loader however is poor. Not what you would expect from a company as image focused as Tag.

Personally, I don't think the FLR is particularly well built either.

Noone said they were hung up on it, was just a comment.

If they had come straight out with the FLR and AV192R i doubt anyone would have said anything... its the change from very stylish to average looking that is surprising.

Maybe that is the surprise they promised for the bristol show :)

I actually like the look of meridian kit.. but the new tag stuff looks like a VCR from 1983.

Anyone know what the DVD192R will look like? is anything being added that would need a bigger case?

Looks dont matter? I am sure the FLR has a good personality

I think Udo has said that the DVD192R will be in the same case as the DVD32R, so presumbably it will look the same subject to an additional button or two.

I agree that the FLR is a bit less impressive in the appreance department than it's bigger brother, but as it's a front loader just stick it on a shelf in a cupboard. My DVD32R (which sits on top of the cupboard hiding all my other kit) never fails to impress people when its lid opens, and then they see the quality of the picture...

    Regards

    Rob

I had a DVD32R on sale or return a while ago and while the sound quality (with AV32R) was excellent I found the top loader to be a bit of a pain after the novelty wore off. Also, the top loader has a reputation for being fragile. I am now a happy DVD32FLR owner. Build quality seems fine. Aesthetically I don't think either of the DVD32s are particulaly stunning.

    Thanks for all your comments.

Ugly? Maybe but it's not as ugly as the DVD32R IMO.

    The vote currently stands at:

    Head 0 - Heart 1

AFIC, the head can sod off. I'm gonna get one eventually, It might as well be now.

I'll let you know how I get on.

David, try a home demo. Have a good listen/watch.

You said you are broke, dont go spending that amount of money just coz it is a good deal.

Your heart may have beaten your head 1-0, so now its through to the final against your ears and eyes!

    Hi All,

It looks like I'm gonna get poorer (but happier) ;)

I've just spent the evening at my dealers demoing the DVD32FLR...

...or so I thought. By the time I got there, they'd sourced a SH DVD32R for me to compare it against! Sneaky buggers!

For the £500 difference in price (new FLR vs SH R), I've decided to go for the FLR. There really isn't that much in it performance-wise and the FLR is a more practical solution (more robust, rack-mountable, etc).

Hopefully it'll get here for my birthday :D

Ahhhhhhhhhh, you buggers..........i'd forgotten about this thread!!!!!!!...........until i was trawling through the masses...

Perhaps, i am in a minority what says 'i dont give a nodules' what a 'unit' looks like.............i just care about what it gives me......

Now, perhaps, you know that i'm a massive Meridian fan...and lets be honest, their 'asthetical' design of the 500 series components are not gonna win any 'beauty' awards...but, they deliver (596 > 568.2 in my case) sound quality, that is a pleasure to be on the receiving end of...So, to me.......i couldn't give a gnats.........what they look like................

The TAG DVD32FLR is an allrounder that will edge the DV27, and compete with the 596.......

My origional tone was not meant to be confrontational, but i do get 'ever so slightly' riled, when it 'seems' that 'looks' are even considered before 'performance'....................

    I love my Boothroyd Stuarts!
