Evening all, long time no post...2017 & 18 were blimming dreadful years but 19 seems to be taking it up a gear...:rotfl:

After anyone's experience of buying an appropriate tablet for a parent/oldiwonk in their 80s....dad's been in hospital 7 weeks after a bowel cancer op and mums intending buying him a tablet when/if he gets out or before

Part of the issue is he's suffered terribly with post-op delirium and/or the onset of dementia so I'm after suggestions of tablets that are reliable, quick and very user-friendly....mainly because I'm their main tech support...;)

My first thought is an iPad but I'd appreciate anybody's experiences/advice

Mods, posted here as thought may get more traction but move if necessary
Cheers, folks

Mum has a cheap and cheerful tablet (Huawei I think) but I've found she gets a little confused when it starts to lag and doesn't respond to her inputs. So something responsive is a must imo. I had to tell Mum she doesn't need to lick her finger like it's a newspaper when using it

I think a decent Android tablet would fulfill your needs, a 10 " would be the minimum size I suspect. I quite like Samsungs offering but there are cheaper choices out there.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, hope all goes well.

As mentioned about the Samsung is a good all rounder

Surprised the usual suspects haven't mentioned Viagra with your OP title

cheers, folks.....the poor old dear managed to get himself locked out of the ward on the wrong side of a fire escape yesterday...probably looking for one of the 5 cars from his past he thinks are stuck in the hospital car park - apparently one of them also has 7 handbags under it....

i won't suggest the viagra, i'd fear for the nurses...

Bless him, he seems like he’s in good hands with you. Hope you find what you need to help him recuperate.

Id go the ipad route, and set up as a child account that way youd have control over in app spending, app access and useage if needed, my nan had very severe dementia a locked down ipad worked wonders for her.

cheers, pal - it's been a mad old few years - wife's massive tumour discovery and removal, its resurgence a year later, daughter's suicide attempt and breakdown then the cream on top this year with dad's bowel cancer, brother's sudden triple bypass and my type 2 diagnosis....:rotfl:

now, that's an idea, hadn't thought of that - thanks - it's the app spending bit that worries me as he has a history of making financial mistakes on the phone...i've suspected he's been heading for something for a while, so i'm not convinced it will only be the delirium

Maybe the Amazon Fire Kids Edition? No experience of it but large icons, a "kid-proof" case for when it falls off the bed & a two-year replacement period if he breaks it anyway. Being kid specific I assume it's well locked down.

You need to identify what it would realistically be used for & then check with owners if it's achievable with this model.

i'd second the ipad, not only for the ability to lock it down very easily but also I believe the OS to be a bit more friendly to the elderly user.

My mother in law turns 80 next year and has had an ipad to replace an ageing computer for the last few years. She found working her way around it and doing emails, playing solitaire, using it for books etc to be fairly straight forward and its locked down by me so that she can't do any other damage!

aye, I remember a similar thread, either here or on eg, that settled on an ipad, mainly because of the os… their old pc is a major trigger for stress for him so looking to do exactly that...appreciate your thoughts, chaps

"Tablet for an 80 year old" Hmmm... Maybe some Paracetamol or Tramadol ..Some Anti-Inflammatory's?
Forgive me. My old Mum and I had a great last few days, God bless her.;)

Definitely an I-pad.
A 2nd hand one would be best. Before Mum passed she wanted a lappy, just didn't work out.

he already sounds like a rain stick when he walks - has done for 30-odd years....

reaffirms my feelings an ipad would be best - lock everything down apart from mah-jong and solitaire...;)

Agree with iPa, then if he can’t use it, you or someone else in your family can. :)
