Haven't seen this one covered so here goes :-

Can the 360 and the original be linked for purposes of system link play ?.

Assuming all the original games are 360 compatible, it would be nice if you were able to play these games via link cable between the two machines.

Anyone read anything either way ?.

    Cheers.

Apparently the official US launch guide confirmed that this is indeed possible if you're game is backwards compatible.

im not slagging anyone off here but why on earth do people want to play older version games on new systems?

I have already got rid of my xbox in preparation for getting the 360. Ive gone right through from an spectrum to a 360 (soon!) and i would never want to play games from an older system. Spectrum emulator on my pc excluded!

Maybe coz then four more mates can come over and play on the old box .... hey presto ... 8 players playing say ... Time Splitters or another game.

It leaves your options open..... why would you want to close them?

because the huge jump in graphics from one generation to the next. Just doesnt appeal to me thats all.

Bit like buying a dvd player and playing a video through it. However i get your point about playing with lots of friends if you ran out and bought 4 controllers for the 360 it would cost a fortune!

:) I was actually hinting that as 360's are gonna be rare for a while he might be the only person with one. So with that in mind mates can come over, they can get another copy of a game from Blockbuster and link the x to the x360 and have some good ol' fashion 8 way action .... ooo err matron! :D

Cheers for the replies, even the ones where the poster might be questioning my sanity. :D

My view is (irrespective of graphical quality) if a game is good and you can continue to get mileage out of it, why dump it just cos its not the latest hot poop machine ?.

At the mo' I have 2 XBox's and will doubtless trade one against the 360 but quite a few games will still be on my playlist and even if all games turn out to be backwards compatible, we dont yet know how we are going to get around the savegame and/or downloaded content on our HD's (such as the trackpacks from PGR2) and I dont think I will want to pay for those again just so I can play via the 360.

If it turns out not to be fully backwards compatible at least I will still have access to all my old games (which I wont trade in because their potential replay value outweighs any trade in value) and possibly as a bonus also be able to system link.

Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before, rather than on, or after 2/12/05.

    Cheers folks.

    UKBoy.

Mildly off topic of the original post but does anyone know if you will be able to transfer game saves from the Xbox to the Xbox 360? I'm guessing that it would only be possible via network cable between the two but I've not seen anything to confirm or deny this.
    Anybody? :)

No it's not possible to transfer data from the Xbox to the 360 even with a direct link using a network cable. This was confirmed by MS a while back.
