Probably a silly question, But is it best to leave your amp on with the volume turned down when not in use or put it in standby mode? rather than switching the amp off?

    It all depends.

For safety and economy reasons I would turn the thing off.
For the best sound they say a warmed up amp, cd is best, so leaving it on all the time is best for sound quality.
Leaving it on standby is the middle ground.

As the vast majority of my equipment does not have standby I tend to switch everything off apart from my video and Sky box at night, and leave every thing on standby that has been used during the day when not in use.

Not saying what is right is wrong just what I do.

For me, standby on everything unless I'm away for a week or more. Then I'll turn everything off that has a power switch (ie. amp, sub, TV). Anything that is either on or in standby stays in standby. This is just for convenience though :)
