lol the R1 has 2 versions..

    PLATINUM - Widescreen
    GOLD - Fullscreen

And the R2 has 1 version - widescreen

PLATINUM but some high street retailers have an "exclusive" gold packaging which is also Widescreen.. wow GOLD Packaging... big deal..

! Anyone know if movietyme do both? I ordered and they shipped already and I didn't think to check (you get used to widescreen only).

Obviously I want widescreen not 4:3

According to HMV they are offering the widescreen version in platinum and special gold packaging. I did check with them and was told there was no pan & scan version being sold over here. Well I have my doubts on that, but if they are selling the WS version in special gold and in that colour it's being sold in pan & scan wherever thats probably going to confuse the average joe.

So the actual discs and content for all of the various Trilogy sets available are the same?
I'm not too fussed about the colour, packaging or extras, as long as I won't be buying an inferior version (assuming of course I do buy it...;) ).

No this is where you have to be careful.
R1 (USA release) have FULLSCREEN 4:3 vers in gold packaging and widescreen in regular silver.
There is no 4:3 version released in the UK only 16:9 Widescreen. HMV are offering the widescreeen R2 ones in a limited edition gold sleeve (like the R1 fullscreen) so if you buy from HMV, you will be okay. If you buy A R1 in gold packaging then you're getting fullscreen pan and scam versions.

Content wise, both editions are the same...

Ah, OK, thanks for clearing that up.
So as long as I buy R2 then I will be getting WS; which is what Play are selling.

Yep, at this stage stick to R2.
Although get your amazon.co.uk order in by wednesday end of the day and they guarantee to deliver your copy by Monday release...

I'll be ordering from Play as I have another 10% voucher to use (courtesy of my Bro' - thanks Bro') so that pushes the price down to just over £25 :)

Not too bothered when it turns up as I probably won't watch the Trilogy until after EP3 is released on DVD (yes, I know it's 8 months away...)
That way I can watch them all in the correct order.
