Hi, I have posted a new thread as this is nothing to do with the importing side of things, just some basic questions. I read all the posts (i think) in the ongoing thread and am very intreaged now. Alot of people were on about a PB2, could someone tell me what it is as i cant find it on the SVS site (unless i am really daft which is possible), Is it the PCI active sub. Also, how much of a difference is there between the PCI and the PC Ultra? One last question, they do three sizes (16-46, 20-39, 25-31), which one would be the best for movies and music, i gather the middle one, but would apprecaite any comments on this and the pro's/cons of each size. Thanks in advance for your elp, as you can probably tell i am a bit of a novice when it comes to subs!!!!

The first number in the cylinder subs signifies how low it goes in stock tune and the second signifies the size in inches. A 20-39 is therefore tuned down to 20Hz and is 39 inches tall.

The PCi is the basic active subwoofer and comes in the three different flavours. The PC Plus range of cylinder subs have uprated drivers and more powerful amps whilst the PC Ultra has an even better driver and parametric equalisation in the amp.

In theory the smaller subs can reach higher volume levels whilst the taller subs can go lower at the expense of some maximum volume but IMO nothing to worry about unless you have a very large room.

Last year most of us plumped for the 20-39 PC Plus as the best compromise between size and performance but this year has seen the launch of the more expensive PC Ultra plus the range of traditional shaped subs so there no longer appears to be one most popular sub in the range.

It all comes down to budget and acceptability of the size. The cheapest cylinder sub is the 25-31 PCi and by all accounts it may be the cheapest in the range but is still a top class sub.

Additionally there is a range of passive (unpowered) subs called the CS range

And Since you are the resident subwoofer expert (that was a compliment, not sarcasm...:) ), I thought you would be interested in my upcoming projects... I have a B4+ (with the Crown K2 Amp) being delivered in two weeks, and plan on replicating that latest Stereophile "World Class Sub" test... And am also running Quad Rocket UFW-10's in the same room...

Could be some fun stuff... I know, Yank overkill, but the house is over 6000 square feet...

Ian thanks for your response! i think the 20-39 will be the most suitable, a happy medium. Could anyone comment on how much improvment the plus has over the standard PCi, is it worth the extra $225? I dont mind spending more but would want to know that it was worth it. Thanks again for your help!!!

    Cheers

Not for the first time, I'm left lamenting the lack of spell check online . Although it would have still probably let me put the incorrect version in the post.

I'll get me coat- off a hanger.

I'd say go for the PC+.
Unless of course you have got the money for the PC Ultra, then go for one of them.
If you buy the PCi version, you will always be thinking....what if.

If you e-mail SVS with youre room size and layout, they will tell you which one they would recommend.
I think for my size room it would of been a 25-31pci.
but i always belive the saying "bigger is better".

I think my nieghbours wished i'd gone for the smaller one thow...

Well I went for the 25-31PC+ which I have tuned to 20Hz (haven't tried out the 16Hz yet).

The reason for this is that I simply think the 20-39PC+ is too tall for my taste. Output at normal listening levels is more or less the same, however the 25-31 really is a lot more inconspicous compared to the 20-39.

I'm more than happy and honestly have no want for a taller sub.

    Cheers

So you don't think the 16-46 is tall and elegant? Like a Supermodel? :D
