I have an old Hitachi RP TV (it just won't die). I have connected directly to the first video feed on my TV with a SVIDEO cable from the SVIDEO output on my DVD player. I also have a regular RCA feed to my receiver from the DVD player which in turn feeds the TV with RCA on the second video on the TV. So I can switch between one and two and thus see the difference between RCA and SVIDEO.

I don't see any difference. There is a reference in the DVD manual to using both the RCA and SVIDEO connection at the same time.

Is that necessary to realize better quality for the SVIDEO connection?

    Thanks

An s-video connection should be miles better than the very basic composite connection available via the phono (RCA) outputs so I wonder if you have set it up correctly.

In the UK most DVD players won't default to outputting s-video but have to have the default changed in the setup menu and I wonder if that is what is wrong.
