    Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice positioning my first surround speakers please.

I have done a quick picture of the room and setup as is.

The 2 large rounded rectangles are sofas. We normally sit on the bottom one.

The TV is sitting on a cabinet with the center speaker on top and both are angled towards the bottom sofa.

The 4 small squares are the speakers. (the fronts are actually facing the sofa)

My question is regarding the surround speaker placement.
Should I mount the LEFT speaker on the left hand wall or on the bottom wall (I assume it should not face towards where we sit?)
Should I mount the RIGHT speaker on the bottom wall or on the right alcove (I assume it should not face towards where we sit?)

Both speakers will be wall mounted and will be fixed 3/4 of the way up the wall.

    Thanks for any help

    Dom

Oh well, I've decided to put both the surrounds on the bottom wall facing straight out, unless someone tells me otherwise...

I have a fairly similar set up. TV in one corner with fronts and centre around it but my sofas would be on the left wall and bottom wall in an L on your picture. I started off doing what you're suggesting but found that particularly on the 'left wall' sofa it sounded very odd with all the rear effects coming from one side.
I ended up putting the left rear in the left/top corner, the right rear where you have it...then upgraded to 6.1 and put the rear surround in the left/bottom corner.
From what I read the rears in a 5.1 system should be facing in towards you from level with or slightly behind the listening position. You're not going to manage that with your room set up but I would consider the top/left corner for the rear left speaker - especially if you can try both.
It's all going to seem a bit odd from your other sofa though :)

Hi I don’t know weather your room would allow this set up coz of door placement and windows. But it looks like an ideal setup from the top.

I'm not concerned about the top sofa as it only gets used by guests and not for watching TV :)

So with this in mind would my placement be ok?

bentleg - you put the TV where my door to the garden is, thanks for actually trying though matey :)

Well it will work, but it's going to be a bit awkward to set the delays and levels for your speakers to suit both listeners. If you can then try the rear left in the top left and bottom left to work out which you prefer - you don't have to fix it to the wall just perch it on the other sofa for the purposes of trying it.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks for the replies guys....

I'll try the LSurround in both corners....

I'm just about to look at getting some Monitor Radius or Canton or B&W or Kef speakers so will probably wait till then.

Also hoping to get a panel TV and wall mount it around christmas time, so my placement worrries are now only short term :)
