    Absolute beginner alert! Sorry.
I would love to play my Xbox in surround sound. I simply have my 32" tv and my XBox. What do I need?
    Thanks.

You simply need a surround sound system. You can get a seperates system (expensive) or an all in 1 system (cheaper and will do the job).
    For example...

Although you can find cheaper variants around.
You can also get surround sound systems especially for games consoles that are even cheaper. I would imagine the quality wouldnt be too good, but may be adequate if you are only using it for games.

I would advise posing a question about which surround sound systems fulfill your requirements on the All in One systems section of this forum.

you also need the xbox scart cable with optical out, as ther's no optical out in the actual xbox. you can then connect the optical line to the sorround sound reciever of you choice.

Just to clarify that the 'surround system' MUST HAVE Dolby Digital 5.1 which a lot of xbox games have and not simply the old 'pro logic dolby surround'.
In case you delve into the second hand market then you are likey to come across the latter (which should be avoided)

I bought the 'official advanced scart lead (£20)' and a 'creative gd580(£120)' surround sound system - never looked back.

    highly recommended.

I'm also interested in plugging in my xbox to my surround sound setup but am not really bothered about getting the "official" optical connections....anyone know of a place to obtain a decent cable to setup the surround sound?

Joytech do an rgb scart lead that also has optical for about £15 but the Microsoft one wipes the floor with it picture wise for £5 more, so just get that one!!!
