Question Surge/electric protection

Novice Member
Hi in my new house I have an old style fuseboard (yep with the little fuses) as opposed to a modern circuit breaker system which is obviously much safer.

I will look to get a circuit breaker installed at some point.

What would protect my house and my equipment best in the meantime? Would a standard surge protector do or do I need something more heavy duty as I doubt the fuse box will cope with an electrical failure.

Advice appreciated

I just bought a surge protector as our fusebox still uses proper fuses like yours. The only thing that normally gets fried is the LiveBox from Orange (utter crap).
