Just thought I would share with you lot my experiences from last night.
Got home from work and decided to pop on a DVD, had alook through my collection and finally opted for Superman (I bought it about a year ago and had never watched it). I was very surprised to hear that the DD5.1 soundtrack is one of the best I have heard on an old film. The rear channels are put to good use and the bass is as good as you get on most new films.
Anyway, are there any old(ish) films you have watched only to be surprised at the quality of their 5.1 sound?

I was pleased and surprised with the quality of the North By Northwest remix. Another Warners title? Perhaps they are just good at this?

I know what you mean about Superman, I remember being very surprised with the quality of the sound mix...

Terminator, and to a lesser extent Rocky, also had enjoyable sound mix's... not bad considering their age and the fact that Terminator was originally recorded in mono

Lawrence of Arabia sounds very good considering its age.

Yeah I agree, in fact, when I reviewed Superman around the time of its release I said it was one of, if not THE best 5.1 remix I've ever heard. It really is superb.
