    Hi,

Play.com are showing that the R1 version of the fifth element (superbit) is RCE is this true.

If so does the disc default to DTS when played or do you have to select it from a sub menu,, or can you change the audio selection during play back.

I ask this as I have a Tosh 2109 and can get around the RCE problem but as I dont get to see menu screens (IE " choose title 1 chapter 1 " to play the film) I dont want to miss out on the DTS sound track.

    cheers

To get dts select sound options on menu and then dts.

I recently got hold of the german R2 dts-es version, the print is awful but the sound far better than the superbit-which is on the bright side.

If you bring up the German and UK sites in 2 windows and go through the same steps (but not completing the final part of checkout at the UK site, obviously), you'll find that the same layout & buttons are used - it's quite easy to do.

German superbit worked out at £21.30, IIRC.

Sorry to hear the picture ain't too hot, though, Phil :(.

    Cheers,
    Liam

I've ordered the german version, I prefer PAL discs because of the increased resolution (576 lines vs 480 lines) and the reasons outlined on http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bwescombe/runtimes.htm I also want to try out DTS-ES Discrete as all my other discs are matrixed.

I have this on region 1 (NTSC) superbit, & it is without doubt, the "reference" DVD in my collection.

I'm using a Panasonic PT AE-100 on a 200cm wide screen, driven by a good HTPC.

I've loads or region 2 (Pal) DVDs, & many region 1s, but they are no match for this disc with regard to picture quality.

I am particularly intrigued that someone would want the god-awful R2 german transfer which is a dire picture in comparison to the R1 Superbit for the benefit of DTS ES!

I would be spending too much time looking at the garbage in the print than the additional benefit of ES audio over the already superb DTS R1 SB track...

This is how the R1 NORMAL compares to the German R2...

Bad Ass I am afraid there is some confusion. They are talking about vertical resolution (amount of horizontal lines in the image, 480 for ntsc and 576 for pal) and you are talking about horizontal resolution (the amount of vertical lines that you should be able to delineate in the image).

It is wrong to assume that as PAL has the ability to have more vertical resolution the image will be better...there is much more to it than that.

Jenz, the German version i'm getting is a new remastered copy as far as I know, have you actually seen it yourself? That website you referred me to compares standard R2 version with the standard R1 version, so the comparison they make isn't relivant. I've got access to the superbit R1 version so i'll compare it myself with the german remastered version when it comes, maybe post my own screen shots!

This is the version that THX1138 referred to above as having an awful print - I know, 'cause I got it for him!

    Cheers,

The German R2 is not remastered. It uses the same crap print as that used on the normal R2. I posted the link so that you could see the differences easily.

Yes I wasted my own money on it :( It was the audio that was remastered in this version sadly not the picture.

If I had know that the german R2 had the same print as the standard R2 I would not have bought it. But saying that the audio is far better than the Superbit which is far to bright even with cinema eq used.

Just a pity that we couldnt have the Superbit picture with the excellent German remastered sound.

And yes i have both versions.

BTW nice to see you here again Jenz, hope things are good.

Kinda wish I had been paying attention before going mad and ordering it... If the picture is the same as the UK R2 (which is not so good) then the R1 superbit will remain the best version, dispite being NTSC. I guess i'll find that out for myself in a few days! On a slight tangent, Superbit R2 PAL discs do have the potential to be better than R1 conterparts, when theyre finally released over here.

Yes but sadly taking a look at CTHD doesn't appear to show this to be the case :( See this link:
