Columbia is planning a new series called the "SuperBit DVD" where the movies (pic and sound) are mastered in the highest possible quality and will therefore not carry any extras.
    The following movies are first:

Air Force One", "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", "Desperado", "The Fifth Element" and "Johnny Mnemonic"

So expect new releases soon. However this information is not confirmed.

I don't understand how they can improve the picture quality even further? Surely they should do this in the first place?

I agree its not just about the bit-rate. Sounds lazy to me.

To be honest I would prefer DVDs as they are with the extras.

Just an extra note. These SuperBit DVDs wont carry the new Higher sampled DTS tracks.... Makes you wonder if these are the highest quality availible.

I'm currently honeymooning in the US and took the opportunity to buy the latest issue of Widescreen Review. They comment that CTHD has an average video bit rate of less than 4 mbps, so perhaps theres scope for improving the video on this one. Full rate dts could also be a possibility.

That said I'm dubious as to the motives behind these re-releases. Still if it suckers the hilarious elitists at WSR to spend more money then I'm all for it.

Re Criterion - am seriously annoyed with them regarding the non anamorphic nature of their new Withnail disc. What possible reason can there be for this, especially as the disc blurb boasts an "all new transfer"

BTW - after sales tax, retail prices over here are still pretty steep, I'm using the opportunity to see the titles I want and then order them from my trusty net supplier the wonderful www.jetdvd.com

Makes me wonder why films like Airfore One and Johnny Dingsda would deserve such a treatment anyway ...
