they only had three at £6 being John Carpenter's vampires , Vertical Limit and snatch. With the rest mostly being £7.99. It's about time the price of Superbits dropped below a tenner. I'm tempted to go for John Carpenter's vampires at £6, maybe if the prices are the same next week I'll go for it.

The Superbit DVD's generally give no better quality than the standard counterpart....

I'd be interested if anyone has done any direct comparisons and noticed anything substantial or just different, but an improvement of course.

I read a recent post on Superbits suggesting the film studios deliberately make the standard releases look less than perfect so that the Superbits look good in comparison. I love conspiracy theories...PJ :D

In contradiction I've heard the bit rates are the same. Easily checked with some PC software or a Sony 7700 DVD player :) Perhaps the only added bonus is a DTS soundtrack if it did not have one before.

Be interested to hear what you think of Vampires. It is the only superbit I own and I thought it had one of the worst picture qualities I have seen.

I checked the first few minutes of Hollow Man Superbit deluxe region 3 verses Hollow Man region 2 and the bit rate for the Superbit was roughly double that of my UK edition.

Yes, it also said they are the same. What I read is that the master they use for the standard release isn't quite as good as the "superbit"...PJ

Well wonders will never cease.... guess they had to entice sales of the DVD somehow ;)

So even tho' it's all in digital format the master is that much better?

I see how this works for analogue audio recordings but unless they use a superior recording process I'd be surprised if the quality of them really sticks out over their counterparts.

The picture and sound is better on superbit, but you also need the equipment to benifit from it. :hiya:

Perhaps you'd like to name a title or titles that you have compared that you consider noticably different, i.e better.

Something I'd like to investigate myself.

Interesting comparisons here :
http://www.hifi-writer.com/he/superbit/superbit.htm http://timefordvd.com/feature/Superbit.shtml

This is a good detailed description of the Fifth Element SB vs standard - http://www.videophile.info/Review/TFE/TFE_01.htm

I'm sure I remember seeing somewhere a comparison of the Hollow Man versions which did show an improvement, but it was so small you'd have to have a projector for the SB to be distractingly improved.

edit - Ah, the review is here - http://www.dvdfile.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1808&Itemid=3

Superbit Vampires arrived this morning. Not impressed. The picture is grainy and edges "dance". Looking at this it is likely to be the same as the r1 superbit by Columbia.

Another Superbit let-down. Wish I had of got the standard copy now but I wanted the DTS.

Good. Glad it was not just me. Seems Superbit is not always awesome....glad mine was only £2 and bought on a whim ;)

All in all then no guarantee of improved quality in fact horrifically in some cases worse

Seems to suggest to me no effort in quality control just sales boosting hype... as I'd thought

I wish they'd make all DVD's Superbit with better sound and remove the, IMO, unnecessary extras......or stick them on another disk if people are really interested in seeing alternative endings etc. I saw the ad that Titanic SE has an alternate ending....LOL
