Having tried a 656, 747 and Denon 2900, I settled on the 2900 and had one for a while but had to move it on due to the purchase of a power amp. I resolved to get another as I felt is was the best of the bunch. I actually ended up with a 757 which I thought would be a stop gap as I had not been hugely impressed with the 747 and thought the 757 was the same player with iLink.

How wrong I was. Can someone reassure me that it is in fact not the same player. As a DVD-A and SACD player it is clearly better than the 2900 to my ears. As a CD player, it's equal at least and markedly better than the harsh 747.

I have read many threads where people are advised to go for the 2900 over the 757. I paid £300 for mine and consider a stonking bargain.

This player will now last me a long time, until I decide to upgrade to at truly high end player.

    It's brilliant.

Where did you get the 757 for £300 from?

Thats a bargain for a 757 i paid twice that a year ago for mine. I do really like pio dvd players and am on a mission to find an 868 at the mo as i want the scaling for my pj. Although the 757does give a mighty fine picture and great sound quality.

    Hi Steve,

I have also upgraded to a 757 to compliment a PW6 plasma and I am very pleased, not least with the audio improvement over a 565.

The only thing that has me foxed is the plethora of tweaks available on both of the above, I pull the manuals out, shrug my shoulders and hope for the best.

I paid £450 new, two weeks ago, feeling safe I had covered all my bases i.e. dual prog scan, dual audio and -R compatability, another player moves upstairs to loft Heaven.

Steve any comments on how the 757 compares to dedicated CDPs?

Got my 757Ai brand new in Feb for £450, good price and a great player.

As to how it compares to a dedicated CDP? That's hard to answer as I run mine through i-link to an AX5i and in that configuration it's superior to my Pioneer PDS-904 CDP through analogue connections and a small improvement over using a coaxial connection.

Depends what you're comparing it to and how you choose to connect it I guess, but my CDP now resides in another system as I'm more than satisfied with the CD performance I'm getting.

I guess that depends on the CDP. I reckon it's as good as most lower end Rotel, Marantz, Sony etc. CD players.

It's the first DVD player that I've been happy with the CD output on since the Sony 900. That includes the 2900 which I was dissapointed with to be honest.

It has a warm, full sound. Maybe lacking a bit in detail and clarity but very enjoyable to listen to.

I bought my Pionner 757 Ai back in March last year and got it for £450 by part-exchanging with my Arcam DV88. I have not had a single problem with it.

PQ is better than the Arcam DV88 and no DTS dropouts either. For CD replay it cannot compete with the Arcam DV88 but it makes up with full DVDAudio/ SACD compatibility. It can play most of the discs out there well.

I would agree with you Stereo Steve - the Pioneer 757 AI is superb!

I had my 757 connected to my rotel ra01 stereo amp last september, whilst i was in the process of moving my cinema amp into another room etc, so tried it out as a cd player and i was quite impressed. I had to adjust the tonal balance, mainly for bass, but was that impressed that much so that i was tempted to sell my arcam cd72. I have since moved my dvd player into the other room with the cinema amp so have kept the arcam.

Just looking at that clock mod stuff, looks intriguing. The parts (clock 4 and psu) are about £350 all in and obviously they would need fitting (£50?). So for £400 you have a super duper player. That would stand me in at £700 and would surely be better than anything else in the price range.

Would like to hear a modded player but it's got me thinking. the thing is, I like the Pioneer in a way I didn't like the 2900. Dunno why, suits me better I guess. I'm wondering if a modded 757 would keep me happy until I can pick up a secondhand Teac 50 for a reasonable amount.

By the way, I'm not so fussed about video quality, just audio.
