If they manage to replicate the original game, we're in for a real treat. Not since the NES have we had more than one new Mario platformer on a home console.

If you count the New Super Mario Bros. also being released on the Wii it will actually have at least three Mario platform games.

I just hope they can introduce enough new stuff to make the update a worthwhile purchase, only time will tell. I am quite excited though, I started playing SMG again a few weeks ago after a break of a few months and I had forgotten how good it is. I just finished the purple coins levels as Mario, now playing through again as Luigi :)

There are a few videos on youtube for the New SMB game, it looks quite good in a retro kind of a way, my only concern is whether it might feel like a step backwards after SMG. I do like the inclusion of the penguin suit though!

The one on the DS was really well done and was a lot of fun so I have high hopes for the Wii version. As much as I like the 3D Mario platform games I much prefer the 2D ones and infact Super Mario World on the SNES is probably my favourite Mario platform game.

Did I miss something because I dont remember Nintendo announcing a release date or even hinting that it would be out in 2009. Has something been announced. SMG is my 3rd favourute game of all time and a sequel is all I wanted out of E3.

They haven't announced a date or a time frame to my knowledge. Play like retailers often do are just using an estimated release date probably just get people to pre-order it with them.

Well I've recently started playing SMG 1 as I hadn't played it when it first came out (picked it up second-hand for 15 quid!) and think it's great although that camera is a little frustrating at times. I have often found with 3-D platformer games that the camera can be more of a hindrance in it, especially in SMG seeing as the game takes place on completely round planets which means more often than not that the camera is in the wrong place and tends to move in an awkward position as you walk around. Having said that, the game does look gorgeous and is good fun. I've not played a lot of Super Mario games and really only properly played the SMB1 game on the NES so I am a bit of a noob to the series which is almost unheard of these days. But as such I think gives me the unique perspective of not already being bewitched by the series and therefore thinking that every single game they do is fantastic (which is what seems to happen in almost every gaming magazine I read).

So on the strength of SMG I think I will give SMG2 a go.

I know it's been mentioned that we won't be seeing it this year so as not to steal sales from New Super Mario which is of course due for release late 2009.

Correct. We won't see SMG2 until 2010, I'm guessing perhaps Easter or, more likely, autumn/early winter.

Well, not as long to wait as I'd expected.....

Nintendo vice president of sales Cammie Dunaway took the stage today during the company's media event in downtown San Francisco and announced the release date for Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The much-anticipated sequel to one of Nintendo's best titles from 2007 will now ship on May 23 of this year, but Dunaway did not clarify if this was a worldwide release date.

The event is on-going and we'll continue to bring you updates as they are announced.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Given Release Date - Wii News at IGN

So not confirmed as a worldwide release but I'm guessing this one will be pretty close all regions(Nintendo seem to be pretty good lately with their first party releases), either way confirmed for the US a few days before my birthday, and being a US console owner that's pretty damn perfect for me:)

[EDIT]European PAL release date has now too been confirmed, 11th June, so sure enough not far behind the US release.

Most of the magazines like Edge and Nintendo have had a preview play test on the game, it looks fab!, and they say it has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever, it also has amazing musical score too

June cant come quick enough

Hopefully, SMG2 will be the game to get me off MW2.

Nothing else has managed it yet but I rated the first game as the best game ever so it has every chance.

can't WAIT for this! Just pre-ordered with Gameplay, £29.99. I played the first one to the complete end & loved every minute.

Yeh, I agree, it really does look much better than the first and that was a really well made a visually impressive game!!!! I really cannot wait for it!

Looks amazing, even better than the first one if that is possible.

Apparently it's been made more difficult too, something that I'm not happy about as I thought that the first one was perfectly pitched.

There's no hubworld either.

Yes, there is no overall hub world per se, but there is the mario head shaped planet which you roam around on and then fly that to different galaxies. You can see this isn the latest trailer!
