How does good sunwoofer cable differ from a standard phono cable. Would a digital co-ax be better than a standard phono. Would there be anything wrong with using a single phono cable from a stero pair?

Just I see specalist sub-woofer cable for £50 (well its in dixons but i think its from ixos) and i have to ask myself is there really a difference. I'm currently using one of a stero pair QED cable (as the other is involved for bi-amping my centre).

Ok thx, that helps, which one would be best the IXOS or the one from ebay. I didn't see any majorly sheilded ones at cable universe though.

Have a look at the Mark Grant subwoofer cable in the cable powerbuys section. I purchased mine from him and its excellent, and I'm sure many others would heartily recommend his cables as well.

    Hello Gazgarber,

A stanard cheap phono cable will work, but is certainly not the best way.

Most of the cables sold as 'subwoofer cables' are no different from standard phono cables.
Some manufacturers do make the effort, but much is just marketing talk.

The best you can buy is available here on this very forum.

Not cheap but is a superb cable :)

Two layers of bare copper screening, not cheap tinned single screening as in some other cables.

And the forums receive a small percentage fee of all sales so you are helping to support the forums :)

The same Canare cable is often sold hidden inside braided sleeving at a much higher price by other people.!

If you have a cheap entry level subwoofer then maybe use a standard phono cable to save some cash, if you have a decent subwoofer then maybe buy a cable that will last many years and subwoofer upgrades.

One of the websites posted above just sells cheap stuff from China, you dont get superb quality for under £5 :D

When I say something is high performance it really is the best available!

I dont Import rubbish from China then try to sell it as 'high quality' unlike a few sites that lots of mentions here.

    Hope that helps. :D

Well i have a mission V6as, rrp's £600 so i would think it would be consiered mid range, supposidly goes down to 20hz (or was it 40, sure it was 20 though).
It goes loud, so would a more expensive cable (For example those that Mark Grant makes) go lower (and more consistanly) and provide a tighter bass, would it improving timing so it would be more 'musical'?

Not a Subwoofer I have tried,

but looks a good spec, so probably worth it.

Certainly a much better spec sub than many of the budget 'midwoofers' ;)

    Hello Diamond,

The Better cables silver serpent are great cables, although I have never done a comparison in the same room on the same system, so cant really give an opinion compared to Canare LV77S.

If there is anyone in UK who would like to compare Canare to the Better cables I can send a sub cable on loan for a week. Needs to be tested with a decent subwoofer !
(send me email not PM as PM inbox is nearly always full !)

Finland is a bit far to send a loan cable - sorry !

Ive just upgraded my Ixos gamma series sub cable and tried both a well shielded Chord Anthem and a Nordost Bassline. The Nordost just edged it for depth and the Chord was slightly better for "attack." In the end I plumped for the Nordost. Highly recommended if you don`t mind shelling out a couple of hundred quid.
