With the VM540ML your getting 95% of the Goldring for a lot less money, I would also say the mids are nicer on the Audio Technica and the ch separation is marginally better also. The Goldring has slightly more bass but there really isn't a lot between them.

I had considered going MC but after a lot of researching the general advice seemed to point at a really good MM will outperform a cheaper MC, reviews of Goldring carts all seemed very positive and the fact that I found their top level 1000 series ( a Gyger S profile line-contact stylus ) for a fantastic price it seemed worth the purchase and hasn't disappointed. The cart worked out at a 30% the price of the TT and when set up correctly the X1 shines with the 1042. Hope this helps.
