I'm getting an xbox in March and I want to make full use of the surround sound etc. Is there a simple system that I could buy with an optical input for use with it? It's gonna be upstairs and my Home cinema gear will be downstairs.
    Cheers

Wait till March, Creative Labs and Videologic now make speaker pakages for consoles, so they might release one for the Xbox.

I reckon if it's not going to be used into a movie system you want to go for one of those integrated jobs made by Sony etc.

They may not be the dog's twitcher for cinema but I reckon they would add a lot to gaming for a reasonable price and the speakers are fairly unnobtrusive.

Nearly 100% of Xbox games are 5.1

This is due to the fact that Xbox supports 5.1 in hardware, and because the Dev Kit had 5.1 Sound Drivers.

The old way of having 5.1 sound was for the developer to custom programme there own drivers for the games sound, this added an extra cost to the development process.

The only games on the Xbox with out 5.1 are likely to be the games cross developed for all the platforms at once without making any Console specific enhancements.
Or if they could not afford a decent sound engineer.

    Cool,

So can anyone give me a model number of one of those Sony systems and can you also confirm that it has a digital input?

Actually I think the Sony ones have DVD players built in, which you don't need. Check out the Yamaha Cinema Station. There's a review in the hardware section of this site under 'home cinema systems'. It's £300 and has DD and DTS as well as an optical input. Looks perfect for a console.

The PS2 is only programmed to use DD5.1 in pre-rendered sequences, not in game which only uses bog standard Pro Logic. However EA have figured out a way to have DTS in game. I think SSX: Tricky was the first game to utilise this.

BTW X-Box has both DD5.1 and DTS built in, although there is no mention of DTS in the promotional literature. Buy an amp that has both. The Videologic Digitheatre DTS is a worthy all in one system to rival the Yamaha for £250, but I’d recommend buying a separate amp and a cheap speaker package if you can.

I just bought one, that's all.

I would recommend going to qed-uk.com - that's where I got mine from for £310.75 delivered, inc VAT...

They gave great service and were by far the cheapest that I could find.
