    Hello all,

Can anyone suggest a cd player suitable for a system based on the Tag av32r, PMC OB1s and Bryston PP120s?

    Thanks,

    Dave

TAG 32FLR or CDT20L. Obvious choices due to the T2L link to AV32R.

Just a check here, you have a set of Bryston PAs, a TAG AV32R acting a pre-amp – are you not happy with the TAGs CD performance as a DAC ? If you have separate PAs I would suggest avoiding a dedicated CDP and go for a DAC with a Pre-amp facility, Cyrus X-Dac Pre, Audio Syhtensis, Tact DAC-Preamp. I assume you have a transport already in a DVD player ? You can easily pick up a Chord DAC 64 for £1100 also heres a Mk II :

If you are going down the Integrated CDP route, Coplands 822 & Sugdens Masterclass are very nice designs to these ears. But I would stick with the DAC side myself.

The Audio Analogue Paganini Mk2 (in oh so classy jet-black) would be my choice. RRP £895.

SO Italian and SO sexy. Phwoar!!

DT the guy has got a AV32R already, Id be very surprised if that does not sound like a £1000+ CDP of today. As mentioned by Laalves - why not get an estoric DVD-V/V/SACD player to feed the AV32R, you can pick up Toshiba SD-9500s for £400 on Ebay.

Or better still a Shanling CDT-100 (wrong side of £1500 though :( ) - just pipe the valve output straight into your power amps - bypassing the AV32r altogether.......

Thanks for the help. Will look into those options later.

CJ, you are right - I should have specified CD transport or player. I have no problems in using the Tag for the DAC at this time although I am considering looking at other processors sometime in the distance future - to me the Tag does not give a very good 3D image. I am currently driving it with an old toshiba sd-3109 dvd player which is acceptable for movies, as far as I am concerned, but not for music. I was originally looking at a universal player so I could make use of SACD and DVD-Audio - in particular the 2-channel high resolution format - but I'm beginning to think that I'd be better off saving my money and going for a cheaper dedicated CDP/CDT. What do you think?

Dave if your considering other processors in future then IMO that rules out buying an integrated CDP now (waste of money) I also think you would need to spend upwards of £1500 to beat a AV32 in CD/DAC mode TBH. Maybe it’s the TAG Bryston combos not gelling well. Worth mentioning the Cyrus X-DAC-Pre again I feel, its just had a very good review as both a DAC and as a Digital Pre-amp in HFC – Im sure 7Oaks will do a demo, and funnily enough a friend also has a 3109 in tandem with a Cyrus AV5-Rotel PA that sounds pretty stunning to these ears :

FWIW Ive always been a DVD-V+DAC user but a stereo only man myself, so I know where your coming from with the 2-channel hi-res angle. Simple truth though is that the writing is on the wall for both SACD/DVDA they will simply fizzle out. So I would concentrate on CD first. Saying that its possible to get a DVD-V/A player for pennies that does very well, Im now using my SD-9500 solely as my DVD-V & CD processor to my Primare, and damned fine it sounds. These can be bought for £399 off Ebay I believe many of us bought them around xmas time - heres some threads you may find interesting (as both a CDP & CD transport – 40spec jitter) :

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56705 Gets interesting at page 8 onwards on the audio side.

Toshiba SD-9500 covers all your bases I reckon, you’re a Toshiba man already, it covers you as a top drawer transport jitter wise for future processors (if jitter concerns you), it’s a very decent CD player IMHO. DVD-V & DVD-A wise its also stunning in 2 channel mode (I run mine balanced to my Primare). Did I mention it has a PAL PS component output to die for.

Finally I notice the PP120s also sport XLR inputs, then in future go for a DAC/Processor/Pre-amp with XLR outputs, Cyrus as mentioned seems to fit your bill, ie that it’s a DAC/Pre-amp with XLR pre outs, or once you sell the AV32R, buy an integrated with XLR inputs & pre-outs (TACTs Semi digital 1275 looks stunning VFM wise as do their DAC/Pres) and feed it from a XLR DAC, ie DAC 64 (£1100) or a Benchmark DAC-1 (£600).

Anyway just some avenues to explore. HTHs.
