Me and SWMBO have got the weekend off, so we're planning to head to the coast or the country for a day out on saturday, maybe take a picnic.. We're literally slap bang in the middle of England (Ashby de-la Zouch) so we can go anywhere really, North Yorks, North or Central Wales, The Peaks maybe even the Lakes at a push,

    Any suggestions?

    Ta in advance :smashin:

looking at the forecast for the weekend BBC Weather it seems to suggest that heading south west will be best weatherwise.

If you fancy walking in the hills (which your post suggests), then why not try the breacon beacons. The forecast looks good for south wales

But I would keep my eye out on the forecast, as good old British weather isn't very reliable...

I reckon north west wales , portmerion for a bit , harlech , barmouth. Basically just drive down the nice coastal road stopping off on the way. Or just go the whole seaside experience and do blackpool !.

If you are coming here (Seaside in Llanelli) I would suggest you time your visit to coincide with high tide, as we are on an estuary, and if the tide is out it's one huge beach!:D:D:D

I'll second that; It's lovely down here in Devon at the moment, if you can stretch that far :smashin: I'm biased but I don't think you can get a nicer countryside escape this side of NZ :D and it's right on your doorstep, comparitively

Plenty of coast, you can't really go wrong, if you just drive towards the sea you'll end up somewhere decent  and chances are you'll pass through some swish moorland to have a secluded picnic on the way

Thanks for the input everyone

Devon would be a bit too far for a day trip, Looking like we might head to the North Norfolk coast to see the seals and explore the heather moors with a picnic and a good book :smashin: Got a soft spot for Blakeney, Wells Cley and that general area, though Beeb weather is saying mixed weather :-s
    Thanks again all

If you don't want to go quite that far it is the annual charity raft racing at Stratford this coming Sunday which is an excellent day out (we'll be going)

I've always had a soft spot for Scarborough - parents used to take us there on family holidays and I loved it.

Haven't been for about 10 years though so couldn't say if it's still tip-top or just a tip now!

Cheers Ian, will look into Stratford, looks interesting! Been to many a charity raft race at Matlock Bath in Derbys and they had one down the road the other weekend

@Bleem - I spent three years at Uni in Scarborough, I know it very well! lovely place to live, though had more or less exhausted the opportunities there by the end of the three years, beautiful landscape though - we visited not too long ago though, and turned into a 'ooh, i used to do this there' or 'ooh, I remember when we did so-and-so there' - bit boring if you weren't there though!

I was thinking about posting a while ago for ideas for days out around Britain. I never know what to do on my days off and often end up sitting around doing nothing. Is there a place already on here for that?

If you don't mind travelling North, then Robin Hoods bay is always a good option for a day out with the girlfriend. :)

Robin Hoods Bay has the *best* fish & chips bar none

It's a lovely wee place but can be very busy during the summer months.

I've done that trip, oh and the *best* fish & chips bar none are served at Ernie Becketts in Cleethorpes, closely followed by The Magpie Cafe in Whitby!:smashin:

Thanks again  Have decided to go to Coniston water, as the other half has never been to the lakes and she wants to go after watching 'Wainwright's walks' the other day :rotfl:

Plus it's forecasting rain in North Yorkshire and Norfolk on Saturday..

Not too bad in the Lakes apparently:

    Friday
Sunny spells and further showers, some quite heavy. Strong to gale northwesterly winds on the tops.

    Saturday
Bright or sunny intervals and the odd light shower. Fresh to strong northwesterly winds.

    Sunday
A dry and bright day with some sunshine at times. Moderate to fresh westerly winds.

The best coast I have ever been to in this country is around Pembroke. All of the coast around Tenby is simply superb, crystal clear sea water teeming with life from seals to spider crabs. Tenby is a nice town for a day out but there a tons of gorgeous places - Freshwater,St Petrocks ( Where the Royal Artillary tank range is located amd you can watch Challenger 2s practicing manoevers.

If you want solitude I can recommend Tany Pystil just outside Oswestry. Its the highest waterfall in England and is at the end of a single track road in the middle of nowhere. There is a campsite and a tea room and miles and miles of countryside..........red kites and peregrines also.

Have a great weekend wherever you go fella...:smashin:
