I didn't know they'd be that expensive. Is that a professional one or something?

No although I doubt that any Semi Pro/Pro would be unhappy to use them as a backup

They are designed to be reasonably directional, ignore extraneous background sounds but most of all the quality of recorded sound is very good
You can certainly plug in any microphone with the right jack and it will more than likely be better than the built in job

This however is a matter of degree. The cost pays off when you need to do little or no work on the audio during an edit for a video destined to be viewed by more than " friends and family"

Why do you want an External Microphone?
If you are unsure you can get an (more) affordable one : although it may not have a "hotshoe" mount and compare quality with the built in one

    The Sennhieser costs even more:rolleyes:!
