    Hi all. :)

After having bought GRANTY1970's M&K K4s and a SS85, I read a few threads saying how good the S85 were and I also bougth a pair from him. :D
I'm currently using the K4s and the SS85 with a pair of Mission 774s as L/R fronts, connected to a Denon AVC11SR.
My DVD player is a Denon 3800.

Will the S985s as L/R fronts, with the addition of a decent £200-250 (second-hand or new) subwoofer equal or better my Missions?
My guess is they probably will be better for movies, but what about music listening?

Please let me know of your thoughts on the matter. ;)

As ever it is a matter of personal taste but the M&K S85 are top quality speakers that most people that listen to them really like but not everyone can get on with the neutrality on offer. I can't speak for the Mission speakers as although I have heard a few pairs I can never remember which is which from their very confusing model range.

If you are looking for a subwoofer to go with them I would suggest the Ruark Log Rythym which BK Electronics are selling very cheaply at the moment

Having compared a pair of S85's to the speakers I was using at the time (KEF Ref 2-2 costing £1750) I'd say they will happily outperform the Missions - in fact I was amazed how close they came to my KEFs - I should add that the S85's were partnered with a £2K subwoofer so they had about the best underpinning you could wish for.

However, as Ian mentioned, the Ruark sub is a bargain and, in fact, had good reviews at it's retail price of £799 so that plus the S85's should be a very good combination.

    Matt.

Thank you both for your replies. :smashin:

Ian, the Mission 77x series was introduced in 1998.
It's very hard to find a review of the 774, so here is one for the 773e which mentions the 774:
    http://www.hifichoice.co.uk/archive/perl/580_printreview.htm
The conclusion from a "Hi-fi World Magazine" review:
"Mission 774 / £500 / Feb 99: With the right ancilliaries, the 774s have a clarity and lack of colouration still rare at the price."
    The original Mission PDF brochure:

P.S: I forgot to mention I might be able to get a REL Q100e for £130 (due to its top being slightly marked).
It does sound like a decent sub, but space being at a premium I'd rather try and find a smaller (and good) one.
Or shall I just get it?

The Q100 is a very nice sub - some would say better than the subsequent smaller REL Q models that replaced it. For £130 I'd go for it - you should always be able to get at least that much back for it if you sell it on in the future.

    Matt.

I must agree with Matt about the Q100 and at that price you will have a bargain. The scuffed top can be touched up quite easily with black boot polish.

Thanks again for the advice. :)

The Q100e should be on its way to me very soon. ;)
I just hope it will fit somewhere in my small living-room. :D

Having owned both the Mission 775e's and the S85s before, I can say from experience that the missions give an utterly contrasting sound compared to the M&Ks. The S85s should comfortably trounce the 774s for movie performance but you may find you prefer the missions for hi-fi (less clinical).

And any reviewer who calls the 774s "uncoloured" needs their ears cleaning out though;)

Thanks for the feedback, Smurfin. :)
I am aware the sound will be quite different, but I do hope the S85s coupled with a REL Q100e will still make for an enjoyable music-listening experience. ;)
