Unlike normal speakers there is no need to stick to the same make as there are no voice matching issues. At your budget and with the music aspect in mind I would put a second hand REL on your short list - anything from a Storm 3 upwards

If you are only considering new subs the Quad (which I haven't heard) has received good reviews

I owned the '675 and ran it w/ 602 s3's and it was great with films and music. Are you limited by size particulary? The B+W gives excellent performance given its size, and good performance however you look at it, but you may be able to get more performance if you lok at some physically bigger, more upmarket 2nd hand subs.

The quad L Ian mentions is reputed to be ace, but I've not listened to one either

If you do go for the B+W im sure it won't disappoint you

thoguht I was the only one mad enough to be up at this time of the day......

Not really limited by size, got a particular look in my room which I think would be overpowered by for example an SVS, I'd like it to be seen (and heard) but not particularly noticed. I'm not ruling otu something a bit bigger, but just what I've read, this seems to fit the bill.

One more thing.... from what I've heard myself, and read on here... I'd take reviews with a pinch of salt...... (assuming he meant from what hi-fi et al. )

You owned the 675 and 602's.... owned.... what have you got now?? :|

I meant forum members who had heard it as well as magazines like What Hifi. The latter seems to get a bad press but some of that is deliberately engineered by disgruntled dealers unhappy with a poor review for an item of equipment that they are pushing and of course it has to be the magazine that is wrong and never the dealer.
