Shortlisted a couple of subs, but I'm not sure which one to go for

    I am looking at:

    Rel Storm III
    Velodyne CHT 12 or 15

Not sure which way to go on this one, I want the best of both worlds for music & movies. (am I asking to much)

I've read the HCC reviews for the Velo (12) and I've looked up the Rel Storm III on this forum (some very mixed views)

My system to integrate the sub (when picked) is

    Tag AV32R
    2 x Arcam Alpha 10 power amps
Acoustic Energy 109 (floor standers) speakers

To top it all off, sevenoaks tried to convince me that M&K were the way to go

My head is spinning (though I wish it was my ears ringing from nice tight, low, controlled Bass)

REL and M&K produce some very very good subwoofers and I would buy one of these makes for sure. I have heard a selection and they are all very good.

The ONLY way to make an evaluation is too listen to them at your specialist retailers such as SevenOaks or Rayleigh Hi-Fi.

No matter what mags and reviews say, if your ear likes it then its good. All that matters in home hi-fi and home cinema is that the sound is exactly what you want. Any retailer who wants your money should have a demo room. If not, find one that has and do listen before you buy.

Is it? I am not convinced by that. How many consumerS, MOSTLY say with no prior experience of subs, know what to look for? What do you bench mark it with? What does distortion sound like? Until you hear a sub without serious distortion problems most people consider it 'normal' for a sub. It ain't.

People don't know what they want. More importantly they don't know what is possible without knowledgeable guidance in the first place.

Most subs manufacturers have good and bad subs in there ranges. Rel has made some iffy subs in it's time, 150 / Tsunami. It has also made some really good ones, ST range.

Of the subs that have been mentioned, both are able performers, though there are other option. M and K do some decent subs but they are VERY expensive in the UK. There are others. I would look to the 15 Velodyne as a good combination between price / performance or if you are feeling really flush a HGS 10.

Are there any other consideration other than performance. Domestic stuff?

    Well folks.... What a day....

I'm sorry for my absent reply but I've just spent some very happy hours this evening setting up my new sub:D :D :D . Thanks for all your input , I spent today demoing Rel Storm & Strata (III)'s:cool:

But what did I end up with?

Firstly I have to say, I found life a lot easier after doing a lot of research, secondly I couldnt have achieved such a research level without these forums.

My most humble gratitude goes out to you folks who share their current area of HC expertise with those who need it or who want to bounce ideas of other like minded people. Thanks especially to Eric, whose knowledge & honesty I am very grateful for:cool:

Its 12 55am and I've just finished off tuning in my spanky new M&K V-125. I am overjoyed at the performance I have received from it. (though I did nearly blow out for the 150thx).

I am one happy bunny whos next step is into the relm of a spanky new projector & screen
    :D :D :D

(oh yes, I also purchased a case of beer to complement previously mentioned item:blush: )
