Iam thinking of replacing mo cannon d500 pro logic amp with a kenwood 5050.My sub woofer at present is passive .the 5050 output says pre subwoofer on it .Does this mean that it needs an amp to make it work on the 5050
    any help much appreciated

The subwoofer output on the amp is for an active subwoofer only (with built in amplifier). A passive subwoofer has to be connected across the speaker terminals of the amplifier probably as you have them connected at the moment.

You will lose the bass management facilities of DD and DTS dvd's by connecting in this manner.
