I am currently using large full range front speakers which provide excellent bass together with mid-sized centre and rear speakers.

Would adding a sub-woofer really make a difference?

    Thanks,

well if you are using your setup for hc, then without a sub, you are missing out on the lfe.
i am far from being an expert, but if want to enjoy hc, then a sub is a must, as important as any part of your set up.

Films contain audio information down to and below 20Hz. If you watch action films there is a great deal of audio information at this level which only a few very expensive full range loudspeakers can reproduce properly.

Having had floorstanding loudspeakers myself which produced loads of bass I was surprised at the difference made when I added a subwoofer.

Thats not necessarily true, at least in the sense of missing the low frequency effects channel (the .1 in 5.1). Most Home Cinema amps will be able to route this bass to your main stereo pair (i know mine can and its a fairly cheap one) in which case while you won't be getting the depth and slam of a sub, you'll probably still be enjoying what there is from the LFE channel above 40 hz.

IMHO,adding a sub will add a dimension to the sound that as everyone says, you're missing at the moment.

Unless you have a large(and I do mean large)set of full range speakers like Linn Keltiks or B&W 801s you simply won't get any of the weight/impact from either music or films.

I think if you ran a poll asking "Who has bought a sub, and thought it added next to nothing to the presentation of music and movies" There would be an overwhelming majority that would agree with the fact a sub makes quite a difference...

    unless its just me?
B+W DM603's - which seemed OK, until I added a sub, and I can;t live without it... everything sounds so hollow without it...

    Well, you convinced me.
I had seen a JBL ATX 100S going locally for 500 Swiss francs ( about $350) and I ended up getting one.

Just finished putting it through its paces.....no doubt about it, it certainly makes a difference.

100 W (RMS) tuned double ports and weighs 16 kg. Great deep clean bass.

    Thanks for the advice.
