My system comprisea of a Yamaha DSP-AX620 Amp, Bose Acoutismas 5's which I use for my main. Bose VCS-10 Centre Channel and Bose 161 for the rears.

Presently I have a Yamaha SW205 Sub, recently it has started to sound rough, almost "rattling" at lowish volumes. Its hard to describe, because I know its there I notice it!!!

Anyone recommend a decent cheapish sub? under £300 (cheaper the better as in process of moving house!)

    Many Thanks

    David

Look at the two usual suspects at under £300

    The Mordaunt Short MS309 @ £229ish and the BK XLS200 @ £279

The BK can only be bought from direct from the manufacturer: www.bkelec.com

The MS309 on the other hand is widely available including from www.richersounds.com which have high street stores up and down the UK so demoing would be relatively easy, just be sure to call the store and check stock before making a journey.

I bought a Gale 3080 for use with my PC for gaming.

I don't think I have to say much more than I took full advantage of Richers 'no fuss 14 day return' policy.

I couldn't imagine using it just for the PC never mind a music/movies combo. It has a horrible warm fuzzy sound to it and it farts very badly from the ports even at only moderate levels.

I you manage a demo of MS309 get them to demo either the Gale 3080 or the 3090 alongside it, I'm sure you'll come away with the MS309.

Have seen the KEF 2500 for around £250 and MS309 for £230

Not been able to audition any of them yet though. May just bite the bullet and order over the net.

    Any comments very very welcome!

(or advice on where to buy from..)

Erm, I think Dfour has the KEF 2500 and is very happy with it.

Hopefully he'll spot this and give you his thoughts.

I have just read (posted today by shakey21) over at the dvd forums concerning the Ruark Log Rhythm:

"They (BK Electronics) said they would have more stock at the end of July (19th) when they got back from their holidays, I have since emailed them - on July 19th and they said they were awaiting stock and would be contacting those in the waiting list in the next few days, I've heard nothing and they said I was near the top of the list - anyone else ordered one and still waiting?".

I would seriously consider one of these at £250 if they do release another batch and you have the space. I would suggest you email or phone them to clarify the situation. I have their XLS200 which is a fantastic compact sub for £279 and another to add to your shortlist (They use quality components and you can try it out at home and send it back if you are not happy with it - doubt you will though!) and by all accounts the Log is a bit better for music.

    contact info here: http://www.bkelec.com/

Theres plenty to read on both subs using the search engine at the top.

I must admit i like the look of the KEF.

Anyone know any good deals online (UK)?

RicherSounds has the MS309 for £230 and HifiBitz have the Kef for £258

I have been calling around local(ish) Hifi centres finding out who has what.

Any views on MJ Acoustics Ref 100? http://www.creative-audio.co.uk/MJACOUST2.htm

The downside of it is... its ugly :) and i dont think the other half will appreciate it at all!

One of the reasons the Kef 2500 is on the list (she likes the look!!!)

i'm confused and surprised by this thread - maybe you can shed some more light....

are the MS309 and Gale 3080/3090 not practically the same??

i have suspected for some time (since i started to consider buying a sub a few months back) that gale and MS subs had a common source, due to thier outwardly similar appearance and 'ahem' appendages.

there is another thread on this forum that CONFIRMS the internal electrics of the gale are made by MS...

what gives?? why the big difference in sound?
