Good morning all ,

thank you for reading my post, I have searched but cannot find anything specific to my query… a few years ago during a house renovation I installed the below;

yamaha amp RX V675
Leg in ceiling speakers x 5 (KEF ci 160qr)
All wires hidden in the wall
Tv with electric tab tension screen coming out of ceiling above the tv and an optima hd144x projector screen.

the set up works great but I couldn’t afford a sub at the time so I bought the best cable I could think it was a vann damme one and now I looking to upgrade my sub ( I used an old one I had from an old machine it’s a Jamo S260)

I am wondering what sub could work for me, the set up is in the left side of a room but total room size is about 6.5 x 10 metres
Any suggestions? Thank you

Mike

If you can give a little more info then the groups bere should help you narrow down what would work for you.

What do you use the system for? Ie split between music and movies.

Do you have limits on wher can you position the sub in the room?

Budget? We could be talking Porsche pricing when you have Ford budget or even the other way around.

Good point thank you, movies mainly and the sub can only on on the left of right of the tv screen, it currently sits bottom left about 2 metres away from the centre point of the tv, it can go left centre or right but to stop the amp wire being on show I would prefer to keep it on the left side.

as for price , I am not stuck to a specific budget each speaker cost me about 200 so I would expect anywhere from 200 - 500 for a sub? I am also happy second hand of anyone has a suggestion,

cheers

Mike

Any suggestions, i have been to curry's but really dont know where to start? Ill speak to superfi where i got everything else from and post on here their suggestions, Cheers

Hi you didn't mention your room size in your previous reply? The size of the room can play a big part in determining the type and size of sub you go for - physical space permitting of course!

To get yo started though. Here are 3 subs I'd certainly consider (assuming your room is average in size).

There's the BK P12-300SB-PR - bang on budget at £500. I previously owned this sub. Great value for money imo. Comes in a variety of finishes (some real wood vaneers). They are hand built in the UK and the aftersales service is superb.

Here's a review from AV Forums on the sub:

IF you can fit it and stretch the budget - its a little over your £500 upper limit - look at getting a SVS PB1000 Pro:

This will be all the sub you need. If you like the idea of the app, but can't fit a PB1000 Pro, look to get the cheaper and physically smaller SB1000 Pro.

Thank you , the room is about 6.5 x 10 metres , set up is over the left side of the room, kitchen to the right, the 5.1 set up is 6.5 x about 4.5 metres, I have been looking at the sb1000 pro, good choice would you say ;)

The SB1000 Pro is indeed a very good sub for the money. Your room is actually quite large (and I assume open plan?). My only concern with the SB (or even the PB1000 Pro) is that they might get a little "lost" sound wise. Although I appreciate that the level if bass an individual like varies greatly.

Based on your room size and use (eg mainly movies), I'd look to spend the extra get the PB1000 Pro. If not you could get a SB1000 Pro, then add a 2nd at a later date when funds allow. Here's an article on dual subs:

For reference I've got 2x SVS SB2000 Pro's in my 4.57m x 3m living room set up. Remember you're in control of the subs volume. The idea of a good sub(s) is to augment the overall sound, not dominate it. I went dual subs to even out the bass response in my room and it I no way sounds boomy etc.

Thank you, funny enough I have had the same conversation with my wife today putting a sub rather side of the tv, I am building a media unit and the main sub will sit underneath this , definately lacking some bass at the moment, the kef speakers are great but the small sub is lacking , I’ll take a read on the review tonight , thank you

That is a huge room, you would need something better than a small sealed box sub. At the very least look at PB1000.

Also ceiling speakers are not ideal for sound reproduction for main speakers. They're perfect for Atmos ceiling speakers and casual listening like kitchen etc, but not 7.0 speakers where supposed to be at head level or thereabouts.

Yeah it is open plan, kitchen on one side and dining room/lounge/cimema room built on on the left, loads of glass so i get it isnt optimum conditions for a surround sound but when we were renovating the house there is a perfect flat wall for the screen to come out out of the ceiling and if i didnt put it here it would have been a loft conversion (still may happen one day...),

Thank you for the info above, 2 subs isnt going to get sign off at the moment but the base is critical, ill take a look at the PB1000 Pro, its coming in at £629 from what i can see online.

Thank you, yeah i have been told after i purchased the ceiling are not perfect, my centre speaker is front facing situated directly under the TV, the the Front L and R are in the ceiling, the rears are in a vaulted ceiling so a little lower down but above head height, what do you mean about atmos ceiling?

I did want to get 7 speakers in but i couldn't fit them in the walls and my wife wanted the clean look in the house, maybe the loft conversation is a good idea.... :)

You should get -10% discount from forum advertisers so it`s going to offer best bang for buck in that price range considering what you get all in all! But keep in mind you may have to move it around as the placement will be so important. If you have the sub at middle of room now it can sound bass light. Move it to front corner which is furthest from any opening and the difference should be noticeable. Just an example.

If that finish doesn´t suit your room decor in X spots then BK Monolith is the second best option with low budget for larger open plan room. It comes in different wood veneer finishes. And also you can choose from two driver orientation which means the cabinet dimensions are different. Made in UK and internet direct business model.

Thank you all for your replies , I have just picked up the SVS PB 1000 pro but where is the 10% discount code aghhh,

I have to say, first set up and it’s rubbish, something has to be wrong here as my front room with a smaller sound bar and sub sounds better that this, I have tried the auto set up but will draw a diagram of my room and advise what I have done there has got to be a better set up than this…..

should I join one of the set up threads or continue on here?

thanks

mike

100% Agree. Something is wrong with the calibration/setup Definitely post at least a diagram of your room. Even better though would be some pictures, showing the position of both your main front speakers and the sub itself - In relation to you main listening position.

It's your thread buddy, so you may as well post it here. I'm happy to help with basic sub set up (crossovers etc). My guess is the calibration is off though.

Hi everyone I have taken some photos of the set up and room layout , hopefully this can figure out what is wrong? At the moment this £640 sub is only a fraction better than my very cheap and old Jamo one, really odd…..

Post calibration set all you 5 speakers to "small" not large. Then change the crossover of the front 3 speakers to 80Hz.

Edit: Also lower the crossover of the sub (in the yamaha amp settings not in the SVS app) to 120Hz. It looks like it's on 200Hz from the above pic

The SVS sub will wake up when you change the speaker sizes all small as mentioned and check the crossovers for the Kef speakers. You have quite odd speaker placement, center below tv, others are in-ceiling. Other settings look fine. I hope you didn´t touch the subwoofer distance as it typically shows further away than it is and/or vs. front l/r.

You do have few placement options, middle of the front wall under tv likely gives you smoothest response, but also bit weaker compared to right front corner where it will sound loudest. If you move the sub remember to run YPAO always and change the settings again.

Keep us posted after you have played some bluray action movie.

Thank you I can change to small but I cannot find how to change the cross over on the amp?

Sorry yes the cross over is set to 200 but I cannot find where to adjust??

Thank you , yeah it’s an odd one when we did the house I was going for an in wall centre and then the other 4 would be higher up pointing at the seat but when I went to buy them the on ceiling looked better and I got up sold in the store ( they were also way more expensive) , prob a better option would be to have them either side of the tv, but….. when the screen comes down I didn’t want them to be in the way as the screen comes just in front of the tv??

I have just ran the Yamaha placement thingy and left the sub where is is now it’s either front left or right that’s all I can go as it needs to stay a little hidden, taking a photo makes the tv look tiny ha ha

thank you both for your help so far ;)

Menu -> Speaker -> Manual setup -> Bass Crossover and from there select 80hz for starters. You need to first set all speaker sizes small.

After this try some good flick which has tons of bass.

In walls either side of the tv wouldn't interfere with any drop down screen imo. The screen itself would have to be acoustically transparent though, if it covered the speakers when down
