What does sub-woofer distortion sound like? Specifically, I was playing Event Horizon last night at what I would consider a modest volume (-12 on an AVR-3802) and I noticed a faint buzzing coming from the sub when the bass became really heavy (e.g. at the beginning of the film, when the camera pans past the space ship). My first thought was: a cable must be rattling against the cabinet's exterior. So I gathered the loose cabling in my hand or pushed it tight against the cabinet, yet I could still hear this unwanted noise. The sub is a REL Strata III and its LFE volume level is set towards the low end (can't remember exactly what, but I know it's relatively low). The amp's LFE channel volume is the default setting. The sub is positioned in a corner but the room does not suffer from "boom". Other DVDs with more dynamic sound tracks cause no problem as far as I can tell - even at higher volumes - although I suspect it's difficult to compare. The beauty (if you can call it that) of those early LFEs in Event Horizon is that they are (IMO) truly deep and, importantly, not cluttered by other sounds (i.e. all you hear is an amazing rumble - with a bit of buzzing in my case). Perhaps, though, it's simply a case of an overly powerful LFE output on this film giving my sub an unwanted work-out. I'd be surprised, though, if this was the case. Given more time I would have experimented some more: maybe tonight I'll have another chance. Nonetheless, any ideas would be appreciated.
