i have a cambridge audio c500 pre amp with stereo pre outs, and an eltax atomic a12 sub with 1 phono in. my question is what is the best way to connect it. if i use both pre outs into a y connector on the sub it affect the stereo image but will it matter if i use just the left pre out?

Your pre-amp should also have a pre-out for a subwoofer. If so then this is the output to use. If not then you might have speaker level inputs on the sub, use these.
Finally I wouls say use the normal pre-outs, but use both via a Y connector as you will miss any bass that is sent only to the other output. This should not effect the sterio image as the main speakers will still be sent a sterio signal giving the imaging.
