I have a sony DAVs500 and a 53" Sony TV - I can't get the sound
to play from the DVD speakers AND the TV at the same time. I don't know if I need extra leads, need to retune the TV or, if it's not possible. Any help (specifics would be appreciated) ?

if u are using the composite or s-video output from the dav, you are only inputing video images from the dav to your tv
to get sound as well, connect the stereo output from the dav to your tv with a twin phono cable

hope this helps

I wanted to be able to be able to watch DVDs with the added benefit of the TV's speakers and to watch TV broadcasts with the
added benefit of the DAV's speakers - I felt that this would give
a better sound and maximise the use of all the speakers.

Not likely. The Sony speakers are different from the Telly's and will have a different tone too. You are likely to get a muddled sound & will certainly spoil the accurate steering across the front with so many speakers shouting at you at once. Stick with the DAVS speakers, they are the better bet.

For listening to TV sound through the DAV you need to use an analog (stereo) connection, but that only works if the DAV has a free line input (e.g. AUX).
The TV needs an output to match, I assume it does not have one thus you require an adapter cable (Scart to RCA audio).

Piping the sound from the DAV to the TV isn't recommended as explained by Nobber22, as well the DAV would need to have pre-outs for this to work.
And again you may require the use of an adapter cable if the TV does not have a line input (white and red RCA connectors).
