Hello everyone, thought I would tell you about Stump Furniture.

They are based in Leeds and specialise in reclaimed wood furniture and bespoke kitchens. I sent them my design for a TV unit and the owner Stuart got back to me with an excellent quote, sent them a deposit, and in just over a week the unit is built.

The Unit was built using 150yr old reclaimed timber. I'm just waiting for it to be waxed and delivered. I have attached a pic Stuart has sent me of the unit. I think the quality speaks for itself

Check out the website Stump Furniture | Stump Furniture

Will post more pics when the unit arrives

Looks very god Sensei. If its not finished yet would you consider gettin gsome speaker cloth and putting in the middle to hide your centre speaker (If thats what your planning on doing). I done that with mine:

Hi. I hadn't thought about doing anything like that. Never seen it done before, looking good though :smashin:

Just planning to show off the centre speaker in all its glory! :D

Have e-mailed these people as am after a tv unit, thanks

Looks really good, must be looking forward to getting it home.

hi, its looking nice , even i have not tried it... i always go for ready-made furniture's..n happy with that :)

It looks great Sensei. :smashin:

I've been looking around for something like this, so i'll be keen to see the updates once you get it back home and setup. Btw what dimensions are the unit, and if you don't mind me asking how much did it cost.

Hi

I've attached my rough design with dimensions. The cost was under £500 delivered. Don't want to say the exact price as I managed to get him down a fair bit from his original quote so it depends how good your haggling skills are ;)

If you're interested just drop him an email he's a pleasant man to deal with and very reasonable.

I'm mid way into a custom unit , delivery in a few more weeks, big old thing, over 6 foot long, 60 cm high, bunch of AV related extras like hidden cavity at the bottom to run power blocks, shortened shelves to drop cables, removable back panel for access yada yada.

I didn't want reclaimed look, so I'm going for a more contemporary solid OAK unit, they will work in whatever wood you want.

Stuart's a good soul, patient, we had a bunch of revisions and changes.

This will be replacing another custom unit I had a few years ago.

Sounds great! Did you design it yourself or did they assist you with the design, regarding things like shortened shelves and the hidden cavity.

Are you having doors on it at all?

I provided an initial design, and specified the required gaps, shelf length etc,for the cable drop, hidden cavity dimensions, but Stuart who's the guy at the helm, fleshed it out across the design for me and provided a final drawing with full dimensions.

If you're unsure, just speak to them with your requirements and they won't have any problem making the measurements up for you.

What I also liked was I can choose any wood I want, and whether it's veneer or solid, I wanted this last , so went for a full solid oak unit (veneered back) , I was also after a contemporary feel to match our other light oak furniture so the "reclaimed" look wasn't my cup of tea.

It's in final stages now, just deciding on the varnish finish and I should have it in about a week or so.

EDIT, Trying to add an attachment:

Looks great Simon! Is that the medium European solid oak?

I am just working on a quote / design with Simon although 100% solid oak is looking to me a little rich for me at the moment. I've also been considering doors with some smoked glass on the outer two towers although I'm thinking again as the bezel around the edge of yours is very nice!

How does the hidden cavity work and how much distance have you left at the back of the shelves for cable drops?

I was planning on not having a back on mine for the sake of ventilation and ease on installation of kit. Is that something you have factored into your design?

A lot of questions I know. it's the first time I’ve considered anything like this. I want to get it right and the knowledge of someone else that's already thought about it is invaulable/ :)

Good question, honestly I'm not sure, I just specified solid oak .

I don't know who Simon is, at Stump Furniture, you might mean Stuart perhaps?

I went back and forth twice on doors, both glass and solid wood options but because my centre speaker is going in the top centre slot, I couldn't have doors all the way across and every unit I saw with doors on the left and right but open in the middle, didn't appeal to me personally.

I'm really a fan of the very thick "bezel" for sure and nothing obscuring it.

How does the hidden cavity work and how much distance have you left at the back of the shelves for cable drops?

Distance from back of shelves to back panel is 6cm IIRC, but this is entirely your call, I wanted (a) air flow space and (B) plenty of room to drop the cables down the back of each shelf.

The hidden cavity is in the very bottom of the unit, as you look at it face on , part of the bottom shelf "unhooks" and while it looks like only say 3-4 cm under the unit, it's in fact nearly 9cm total space.

The cables from the back of all the equipement drop down , and then all the power blocks, wireless router, gigabit switch, and all that crap are hidden underneath the unit in the cavity.

Its's also quite nice if you want a non visible place to hide your keyboards and what have you.

I was planning on not having a back on mine for the sake of ventilation and ease on installation of kit. Is that something you have factored into your design?

I have a large back panel which is removable (which is the key IMO) . I wasn't concerned about ventilation as the entire front of the unit is open and I left plenty of space at the back behind even the deepest unit (the amp) for breathing space before the back panel, so no issues.

A lot of questions I know. it's the first time I've considered anything like this. I want to get it right and the knowledge of someone else that's already thought about it is invaulable/ :)

Not a problem.

One last thing, I had my shelves adjustable, even 3mm there's a notch.

I also ordered 2 spare shelves so I had flexiblity if needed.

That's about it advice wise that I can give you.

My varnish samples arrive in a couple of days, so I'll have delivery some time next week.

I'll take some nice shots showing it with all the gear on .

Thanks Simon! I of course meant Stuart at Stump not Simon

I have dropped you a pm.

Nice, although I specifically didn't go for the old reclaimed finish, mines a light oak.

Thought you might like to see the snazzy varnish finish..

What varnish finish is that Simon? It still looks wet!

I'm still trying to sort out dimensions for mine as I need something shorter and less wide than yours as I need it to fit in a bay window and have the TV on top without blocking out all the light.

Just trying to make sure each of the three towers will still have the width for a full size component!

I really like the removable bit at the bottom of yours (does it attach with some sort of biscuit joint?) but I just don't think I'm going to have the height to do it justice...

Are the vertical pieces in the centre offset into the central tower on both sides? It's difficult to tell from the photo.

I'll have mine all in place with all the kit on and such in 2 days time, probably Monday, I'll take a bunch of really good photos showing the removal area at the bottom, how it's joined, shelf cavaties etc and post them up for you.

I actually have the unit now but it's minus a couple of shelves which got left off the delivery, it looks.... beautiful.

I matched it perfectly to all the other oak in the living room, it's killer.

I'll throw up some proper images early next week.

In regards the varnish, not sure, I got a couple of wood samples from Stuart and choose from that, he will know.

Have you got the additional shelves yet Simon?

Can't wait to see the finished article.
