    Hi all,

If I had an MCE machine with all of my music on it and a laptop with WMP, would I be able to stream music from the MCE machine to the laptop AND have the music in sync ? I'm having a party in a couple of weeks and would like to have the same music in the lounge as in the dining room.

If not MCE and WMP, then what else ?

    Thanks,

    Richie.

Xlobby is the only solution for synced music.

Don't know if it will work on MCE but I have used Windows Media Encoder 9 in Windows XP to stream music wirelessly throughout the house

Streaming is easy, sync is not.

    JohnS,

You are correct of course. Hadn't picked up on the sync requirement (even though it was specified in capitals!). If Richie can't accept the time delay of a second between his MCE machine and his laptop when using streaming then he can't use Media Encoder :) .

This one interest me too. John, can you expand on Xlobby, an explanation of what is it, how it works, and what are the requirements would be helpful.

    www.xlobby.com

Its a free media centre style front end, not so great with tv but superb at music and adequate for dvd, best of all free.

I have a 8 zone setup running from a independent machine in the garage contolled via a touchscreen and 3 ppc's plus a client on my desktop computer.

You could also try Slimserver and SoftSquueeze which is a software version of the Squeezebox2.

Install SlimServer on the PC which stores the music and set it up to look where you have your music stored. There's loads of setup options but most are OK to start off. Once you've got SoftSqueeze installed on both machines, then set it up to sync both players.

To install SoftSqueeze on the Slim PC follow the instructions in the help section of SlimServer (web interface).

Install SoftSqueeze on the laptop from the url above.

To let you know a wee bit on how it works, SlimServer 'controls' the SoftSqueeze players, and can run them independantly or together. You can browse music using the web interface of SlimServer or by using the 'remote' in SoftSqueeze.

It sounds daunting but it's really quite simple once you've played about with it. SlimServer is a powerful tool and can be used to it's full extent without the Slim Devices hardware.

If you go this route and face any problems, feel free to get in touch....

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but this plug seems relevant to people doing research:

I wrote a piece of software, SyncBoss, which allows you to do millisecond-precise music sync on LAN using a Winamp plugin + a Java app.

Infos here: syncboss - Project Hosting on Google Code

    Cheers,
    youknowjack

J River can sync across zones, however it is licensed.
