Strange sound over digital output

Standard Member
Hey guys,

I've tried searching everywhere for this, but I'm really unsure as to what to call my problem which isn't helping my searching!

Basically, I'm trying to play any DVD that has Dolby 5.1/dts5.1 over an optical connection to my Sony STR-DG700 receiver. I've tried doing this through my xBox 360 and also from my Macbook Pro (using the 3.5mm to toslink audio adapter) and I have the same issue with both.

What happens is I get a sortof 'muted' version of the audio - almost like what was recorded in the studio with some after-effects added in, but most importantly all voices are extremely faint. The moment I pipe the audio over an analogue connection the sound is perfect, but then I'm not getting true 5.1.

I'd appreciate any help on this or if I just haven't searched correctly, a pointer in the right direction.

Thanks guys
