Strange problem with iMac sound output

Distinguished Member
I am using the 3.5mm output jack from my iMac to feed a set of Bose Companion 3 speakers.

Everytime I play song through iTunes, I get quite a loud high pitched buzz through the speakers. This sound continues for perhaps 20 seconds after the music stops and then reverts to virtually silent. When the music starts again, so does the buzzing.

I have connected the Bose speakers to other sources and this does not happen, so it must be down to the Mac's output. It does not appear to happen through the built in speakers, though, but maybe they are just no sensitive enough to hear it?

Has anyone else had this problem?
