I was watching a film recorded on the hdd of my Panny E95 when the picture suddenly froze for a few seconds and the time display also froze. When I tried to delete the recording it said it couldn't delete it, or for that matter any other recording on the hdd. I switched the machine off and back on and was then able to delete other recordings again but have not yet tried to delete the film that froze.

Would this suggest the hard drive has read/write errors and would formatting the hdd cure the problem or would it be better to divide the dodgy recording and isolate this part of the hdd?

Sounds like you may have a dodgy HDD - use your E95 normally and if you encounter the problem again then consider getting a replacement.
