I have it connected through my amp/receiver.
Yesterday i turnes the ps3 on and the sound was fine but as it turned on there was a loud pop noise through the subwoofer and i had no picture but sound was on.

I tried a few times with the same results.
I then closed the ps3 down, unplugged power lead for a minute and put back and it was fine after that but what happened there?? any ideas?

Hmm, just throwing ideas out here. Have you got your PS3 set to output audio via. optical with some other settings? I forget what they are now, although I recall when highlighting them that they give a warning that they can damage your equipment if your amp does not support them. Found in Sound settings, I just have DTS and DD5.1 selected, as well as whatever was defaulted to on.

You got surge protector?

Although I don't have the Slim, using launch 60GB model PS3.

Had the same thing. First no picture then after 2nd or 3rd start up a horrible popping, crackling sound through the speakers and then it eventually boots up.

First happened on 40GB fat after 3.01 update, got it swapped with extended cover, got a brand new slim, updated to 3.01 started doing it again.

I am also running fw 3.01 on my 60GB PS3, and have not had the described problem. As for my console, the only real issue I have is the occassional system lock-up which requires it being powered down from the console - this only happens some times when using the Internet browser.

Other then that I have had no issues, other than the rather annoying fan noise which kicks in, anyway.
