What a laugh.....On my way home today decided to try to stop and take some pictures for an idea I have for a picture. Actually I had the idea for the photo comp a few months ago but couldn't get the image I wanted so gave up. Decided to try again though.

So I get in position on side of the road in a street in Guildford, my raised position overlooks a busy road and beyond to the A3. In this vista is also an underpass for folk to walk under the A3 to shops etc other side. After about 15 minutes of taking pics a Police car parks behind me and the officer comes over. Asks me who I am taking pictures for. Then, once told, asks me if I have any form of ID. I give him my business card. As the images require consistent light I ask him if I can continue taking pictures. He replies he'd rather I didn't and could I move away from the camera and come with him to beside his car. Once at the car he pulls out a form that he has to fill in to note that he has stopped me, why, when and where. He says it's for my own records and safety? 5-10 mins of form filling and he gives me my copy. I go back to taking pics and he watches from car for another 5-10 minutes. During this period a lad comes up to me to tell me that there is a copper in a car watching me and that I should be careful. I tell him that it's OK and that you are actually allowed to take pictures in the UK....

So about 30 minutes after that another police car pulls up. This time on the road I am taking pics of. He parks on the highway and starts walking up embankment to my location. I start walking to him. I tell him that one of his colleague has already spoken with me and show him my little yellow ticket....He appears slightly ****** off that he's had to drive up after getting a call about me....the other chap never called to say he'd spoken with me it seems.....This chap also asks what I am photographing. I tell him, he says "Wow, that's very clever" then says good luck and leaves....

I am not sure whether to laugh or cry about this. The first guy just saw me and decided to stop, the second got a call from a member of the public!

Anyway, I now have about 350 pictures to look through.....Hope it works!

    Gordon

p.s. my little ticket tells me, That the grounds for stopping me were
    Under section 60 CJ+PO ACT 1994, Sec 44 Terrorism Act 2000

stop and account, sensitive location photography equipment present......

    Missed that bit.

Good grief, I take it you were taking pics of an MOD base or Nuclear facility?

ummmmmmm......i am just wondering whether the police stopped you because you were taking photos or whether you just looked like a very shifty character (hehehe) up to no good.

Personally i think it is good...they are just doing their job....with everything you hear on the T.V nowadays you could have been up to anything......

Let me guess, someone complained about someone using an SLR (and thought they meant Self loading rifle)?

To be fair, I did look a mess...but honestly. What high crime do you think I was likely to commit? I think the Police have limited resources. I wonder whether stopping folk carrying out legitmate leisure pursuits then having to waste their time and mine filling in forms is a good way to spend them.....

That's truly baffling, I'd feel pretty hurt if that happened to me in all honesty.

People seem to have the strangest reactions to people taking pictures, and I don't quite understand it. I've been snapping pictures of cool-looking sunsets before round the back of my house and I've had kids on bikes stop and stand gaping in amazement. I never knew photography was that unusual

I had a similar occurrence this week on the top floor car park of the Bluewater shopping centre, there I was snapping away, as you do, when I was aware of a police car following me from a distance the car suddenly appeared beside me a young female police officer asked if I had permission to take photos on the site, “do I need permission” I said. “Yes it’s a private shopping centre” she replied “and they worry about the terrorist threat”!
So it seems that you are not allowed to photograph anywhere you want in this country!

In fairness, bluewater has been listed as a target. HOWEVER, if you were covertly scoping out a location, what would you use...a cameraphone/ultracompact, or a dirty great DSLR? Let me think about that for a second

Hmm, that looks highly sensitive, not!

It really makes you wonder what we're coming too, IMO.
I can see the need to be careful, but it's getting beyond ridiculous.

Ha ha ha. What a scream (but sad as well that they should even be interested). Considering some of the places Gordon & I have taken pics this really takes the biscuit. Unbeleivable.

And the anti-terrorism act. Absolutely amazing. Since when was that location a sensitive area. And to think that a terrorist would stand in full view with a tripod for ages - not very stealthy I have to say. Someone really needs to get some commonsense knocked into the police & high-viz brigade.

Like I said before, get a press card and the world is your oyster.

Anyway, congrats on not being arrested, and looking forward to the pics.

Putting it into perspective, nobody got hurt or even abused in any way, all the police did was to ask Gordon what he was doing, logged the stop and gave him a copy of the form stating why they asked him what he was doing, satisfied themselves that he was not breaking any laws and went on their way.
Pretty standard straight forward behaviour what we would expect of the police, who after all are there to protect us, bearing in mind the current climate.
Photograhers dont have any dispensation from being asked what they are doing, we are all members of the public.

All that happened was that Gordon felt irritated by it, as we all would, and in turn created a new thread for discussion.

Indeed Bodoman. No one was injured and I did just start it as I thought it was interesting information for folk.

I was just inconvenienced and I suspect that all the folk watching now think that it's illegal to take photo's in public, certainly the lad who approached seemed concerned I was going to get caught for doing something illegal. I don't see any problem with Police stopping folk to ask them questions if there is a legitimate reason. I do have a problem with the Police stopping folk to ask them questions when there is no obvious legitimate reason. Obviously the first policeman thought there was and the second was responding to a call from a member of the public(who it would seem isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer). I just think it's a sad state that society is in if someone taking photos of traffic can be considered worthy of investigation....and that a passing policeman feels that there is something dangerous and suspect about it as well.

It is indeed a good topic for a thread. Anyway, the 498 images are now almost out of the camera......hurrah!

True enough Bodoman - no harm done. Still, strikes me as a bit of an over-reaction on behalf of the member of the public and the police.

Anyway, I'm dying to see these pics Gordon. This is one good way of generating pre-publishing interest!!
