Still need some basic help here.

Question: Which of the following is likely to provide the best picture for my Philips 30" lcd?

RGB scart (from Sky box) to RGB scart input,
RGB scart (from Sky box) to VGA input,
RGB scart (from Sky box) to Y Pb Pr input.

This subject has been discussed in part in lots of places but I'm finding it really difficult to track down a straight forward answer.

    Thanks a million.

RGB SCART to RGB SCART. Get a QED Squart lead and make sure RGB is enabled on the sky box.

RGB to <anything other than RGB> requires some conversion. Unnecessary conversion is a Bad Thing. Go RGB > RGB.

Thanks to both of you, I'll now sleep at night. Seriously, though, it just goes to show (yet again) what nonsense some store assistants talk. Yesterday, Comet in Swindon, Nobbydog asks 'whats the best way to connect up this 'ere lcd?' to which I get the reply 'composite is best, and by the way lcd's are better than plasma's as they have greater contrast which is due mainly to the fact that the plasma's look green when switched off but the lcd's are black'.

Can you believe it????? I bit my tongue, thanked him for his useful advice adn made a sharp exit.

Further to your previous post, nobbydog, about your screen, are you now more impressed with it? I'm quite interested in getting one, if I can find a decent price. I'd be interested to hear your comments on it, now that you've had more time to play with it.

    To reply to your question,

I've now fitted 'Thor' RGB scarts and the picture quality has definitely improved to something like what I had expected. I'd say 90% of the way to being completely satisfied. I've also ensured the correct settings are in place on the Sky box. Given the price I paid (£1965) I now feel that I'm getting value for money. If the Sharp lcd's produce a better picture, fair enough, but you would need to fork out another £300 - £400.

Haven't seen any Thor cables in Swindon - Comet at Abbeymeads and Greenbridge both stock the Monster cables which are pretty good. Dixons in town centre stock Ixos which are also good.

    Hi Guys

Bit of a newbie on the posting front.... sounds like a couple of you come from Swindon - I am in Ash Brake (near Abbey meads) - just taken delivery of my (beautiful) Panny PW6 and have been using it for a few days - most impressed :D

    I got the THOR's from

who are based at Unit 4, Lynton Road, Cheyney Manor, Swindon. I got them to Devizes, mail order, for approx £17 each, I'm sure you could go round and pick them off the shelf from the shop.

And yes, I was talking about the new Comet next to Asda Wallmart, why do you ask??

    Greenbhoy,

I'm SERIOUSLY considering the P6. Any chance of coming round to have a look sometime??

Yes mate of course you can, but i've still got things to do:-

Plasma is on a crappy piece of furniture at present (had a guy round last night to quote on custom build furniture - mucho costo methinks....)
Only DVD is setup at present (and just via RGB Scart) - need to get 2 x good Scarts (Thor from TLC @ Cheney Manor?)
Need to get an additional Component and or VGA board for the Panny
Need to return the Quintro+ (cr*p)
Only fronts setup at present (Centre & Sub to be setup over weekend) - surrounds much later - need carpet moved or floor wooded out.....
Need to buy a JS box (have heard that Syncblaster does not cut the mustard)
Need to get my head round (and test) daisy-chaining of DVD / Sky
Need to get Sky moved (as it up the other end of the living room)
Need to get a Dreamcast VGA box
Then need to re-calibrate the whole setup again!
So not really much to do then?!!!!

No point seeing it at the moment (just DVD through crappy scart - although IMHO the picture is awesome :D )

I should have it all setup as I want real soon - where do you live?

    Regards GreenBhoy

I live in Calne but quite often end up in the Swindon area working. Thanks for the offer, let me know when you've done everything on your list (this side of Xmas?!?, looks like you've got loads to do). At present I have 'er in doors' where I want her (so to speak). She has just agreed that January 04 gets the green light for the plasma so theres no desperate hurry to see the P6 set up properly in house as opposed to a retailer. I don't actually know of any retailers in the Swindon area that have the P6 on demo anyway. Did you demo yours and, if so, was it local?

Demo'd and auditioned loads of plasmas (Hitachi, NEC, Pio, Phillips & Panny) in London (where I work), all over Swindon in Curry's/Comet etc (crap) and eventually ended up in Hickmans in Swindon where I demo'd a properly setup PW5. My wife was REALLY dissapointed until Hickmans - once she saw the picture (especially Sky) she gave me the green light....

I ordered a PW6 within a week (to avoid any wife cool-off) from a web mail order co. and am now the proud owner. All of my family have came round and are totally stunned by the current (crappy) setup.

Cant wait for JS converter and proper Thor Scart or Component cables to enhance...

I will let you know mate.....

I'd have thought you'd be wanting to get the Digibox up and running for 12:30 on Saturday :)

    Best regards

Lets hope big BoBo is not to sorely missed today - and dont go throwing sharp objects if the Bhoys loose a goal or two!
