Hi guys,

I’ve been gone for a long time, but am back with avengance. I’ve re-married, bought a new house and battled with with the local council to get planning permission for a 6m x 6.5m out building in the back garden.

The room will be split in two, giving two rooms of roughly 2.8m wide by 5.4m long - Perfect for half home gym and half dedicated home Cinema.

The kits all been in storage litterered around the house and thankfully the wife talked me out of flogging it all.

Watch this space, footings being dug now

Well, we’re a few weeks on and the shell is up, and the roof nearly complete.

The 1st fix for wiring is going in this weekend, along with the speaker cables hidden away for surround and ceiling speakers. I’m going to run the cables to do a full Atmos 7.1.6 system, even though for the time being the cables will remain hidden away.

We’re now thinking about doing a riser platform for the second set of seats at the back of the room and possibly an Acoustic screen in front of the mains to utilise the full width of the room. The possibility’s will be endless, so I need to future proof as much as I can up front.

Hiya Steve I am thinking of converting my garage into an AV room, Its of similar size 2.8m x4.7m. Ben interested to see your layout utilising the 2.8m width.

We now have a roof. Today was spent running the remainder of the speaker cables and placing the embedded floor trunking which runs the full length and width on both sides ready for the floor screed tomorrow. This is the easiest way I thought for future proofing and hiding cables.

On the Gym side, we’ve run the back boxes and cables for sockets in the floor for the gym machines.

Another couple of weeks and the builders will be done, it’ll be back over to us to complete.

I managed to pick up another pair of Kef TDM34DS’s for the rear 2 so happy with that

Looking good Stevo, keep up the good work :)

We now have plastered walls and the builders are practically done so it’s over to us now to make a start on the Proper Cinema within.

We still have to wait another few weeks for the Bi-Folds to finish being manufactured but at least we can start mist coating as soon as the plaster is dry.

Watching with interest. Hopefully I'll do something in my garden eventually.

Out of interest, how come you needed planning permission? Didn't it come under permitted development?

Due to the height? Nearly 3m vs PD max of 2.5m.

Hi,

It’s over permitted development as it’s over 40m2 plus we’re In a Conservation area so don’t actually have any permitted development anyway ‍

In addition, because of the Conservation area, every tree has a blanket TPO

It was rejected originally, until we counter argued and won every point the council made as to why we couldn’t have it.

Wow that's a lot of reasons

Building shell is complete now, all sheeted up with a long wait now until the Bi-Folds arrive

We finally got the BiFold doors fitted just prior to Christmas and have spent the last 4 days hooking the building up to the mains, painting and second fix wiring.

Finally we have lights and our vision is coming to life. The Gym half should be complete with the exception of skirting and the internal door weekend after next

what a totally magnificent building you are constructing , like others on here I can't wait to see it finished !
Also like the colour scheme you have , its very similar to mine !.
Thank you for sharing your project,

The gym side is up and running but we’ve stopped work lately on the Cinema side recently due to a pet being taken ill.

Today I managed to get the Surrounds, screen and Projector up and running.

We just need to get the internal door and skirting done before the carpet can go down but for now I’m happy with how it’s turning out.

Looks great. What paint colour have you used in the cinema?

Welcome back !

Time to have a chat with your local haberdasherie or speak to Whaleys about some dark velvet, it doesn't have to be black

The black is liquorice Matt from Wickes, there is a good thread on here somewhere and that came out tops for being blackest and least reflective.

We’re planning on making up some Panels to help the acoustics and light control even more.

We’ve also considered wall to ceiling pleated velvet curtains but won’t be rushing whatever we do. Half the fun is making and tweaking.

I know what you mean. I have picked up six more panels of 6 and 9mm MDF as I have enough black velvet left to do another 2 foot of ceiling and one unused dark blue velvet curtain for more side wall panels....

Our whippet will be annoyed with me as the room I will use for stapling the velvet is her favourite afternoon spot !

We finally have a door between the rooms and Skirting Boards throughout. We asked the chippie to embed smoke seals in the door and make it a nice solid fire door.

It’s hard to believe how much sound the door cuts out and when the blackout blind is closed on the Velux the room is now pitch black.

The woodwork painting has begun, The Alarm and CCTV are up and running and the Underlay and Carpet ordered for the Cinema room. The speaker cables are Mark Grants 4mm Van Damme blue which will live in the floor trunking and pop up Just in front of the speakers

We’ve now decided to Carpet Tile 1m up in the Cinema, Bass trap the 4 corners and use the existing Acoustic panels for the remainder of the front wall. DIY panels will be used on the remainder of the room alone with some blank panels so that the room isn’t over treated.

The new Mark Grant Speaker cables are now in the floor trunking along with all the other cables and the slot and holes cut ready for the grommets.

A weekend of woodwork painting and we’ll nearly be ready for the carpet to be laid. Then the electronics can start to be moved in.
