A great man, an even greater mind, defying the medical profession by living 50+ years more than the two given to him when he was 21. RIP.

A true genius who, without a doubt, made a lot of scientific progress for the human race. RIP, Professor.

Shame he's gone. I hadn't realized how quickly his illness came about until I watch The Theory of Everything.

The man who wasn't supposed to be alive, defying his own body for 54 years, while working on some of the biggest theoretical physics theories in recent history, and being an overall top bloke (ok, there are alleged reports of erratic wheelchair driving, but come on, wouldn't you?) Pretty much makes me feel like I'm wasting what time I have.
In light of his life, I don't think any of us have any excuses not to get over things and get on with something useful.
    RIP Professor Hawking.

Brilliant human being. Even with his disabilities he achieved so much...a true inspiration to mankind... And should be a lesson to us all. If only we could all stop fighting and just be together for humanity.

I bet if we ask, 9 of out 10 people will have no idea what SH has done for this planet but if the queen dies (or some kardashian) there will be people crying on the streets, people getting drunk in the pubs, punching each-other like at millwall game and stuff. This world we live in ...I say this because I see the wide discussed subjects and it is only when a person dies the sensational of this achieving is widely distributed

he could not have "chosen" a better day to disappear to another universe: einstein's birthday!

when I read a brief history of time I felt so idiotic of not paying even more attention in physics and math in school and I actually went back and researched stuff so I understood it better; had several pages I read 3-4 times before I got the idea

this man, even "seated", makes us feel very very very tiny and insignificant

A truly remarkable man. We forget that geniuses that came before him such as Newton, Einstein, Ramanujan, were able bodies with brilliant minds yet he defied all medical expectations and surpassed physical hardship and used solely his mind to push humanity further. Sounds God Like to me. RIP Sir Stephen Hawking

I went to one of his lectures at Cambridge back when I was doing A-Level physics - very cool and he had some funny (i.e. we all laughed) answers to the questions he got at the end.

9 out of 10 people might not understand what he has done, but I'd suggest most of them do know who he was. He's been in The Simpsons for goodness sake

    Staggering achievements in his lifetime.

Even if you don't understand his work - I have a near pristine (unread) copy of A Brief History of Time - his contribution to human knowledge will echo for generations.

Not bad for someone given just years to live when he was in his 20s.
