Ok - first time user of STEAM

setup account - printed off login details - I cant connect. Click retrieve account - its asks for my login name so I type it exactly as it states on printout and its unrecognised.

Not only that but the user interface is lame - error windows appear behind other windows so you dont know that there was an error.

Dear god who wrote this pile of crap.

i been having problems conecting too, but lets face it, with CS Source in motion and HL 2 coming soon with EVERYONE trying to download the preload, can you blame them?
Give it a chance it can be good when it isnt suffering from bugs and mass Half life Histeria!

Yeah Steam has been iffy all day.

What really annoys me, is that you can't even play games offline :(

Yep I posted querying Steams status on the online forum today. It seems to be up and running now though.

When steam runs if you don't have a net connection it will ask you if you want to use offline mode.

Failing that if you do have a connection and don't want to play online you just select campaign from the HL menu after it loads and you'll get the single player game.

Steams been fine for me all weekend. I have just started from scratch and re-opened and old account and have downloaded everything (cs, hl,cs cz, cs s) including the HL2 pre-load. I've had good connections up to 450 kbps on my 512 adsl so not too bad:)
What kind of fps are you all getting on the source stress test?

I've managed 89.79 fps @1280x1024 highest detail with reflect world 6xAA and 16XAF so if this is any indication of how HL2 rund I'm

Anyone know any noob servers as I've never played counter strike before and I've heard a lot of newbie bashing goes on :(

I played counterstrike once. 15 secs between pastings was about my record.
Currently I quite enjoy Far Cry online. The assault games can be good fun if you get sensible players on both sides.

Counter strike IS hard. I blame all those bloody snipers!
I mean, you could be walking along minding your own business and suddenly BLAM! your dead.
Your like, what the fudge???. I dont see this as "fun".
There really should be some rules as to how many snipers should be allowed on one side.
Teams are always better when they are balanced anyway.

Still it is a good game that requires a lot of thinking and listening! and strategy. I find that when people comunicate and coordinate attacks it always works best. Also, dont rush in. Thats what noobs do. Let them go in ahead and watch them being sniped. THEN you go in and mop up! Ive actually survived a few rounds without dying this way! Even picked up some enemy weapons!

STILL, this is a mod therefore not perfect. I think valve should perfect the game with source.

Hehe, I think many would argue with you :) Most people get uptight when a new release comes out and many will say that 1.3 was the best, some still think the beta mod was better :p

Snipers are not overpowered, they suck really hard at close range, and if you can close the distance down they are usually dead, although being handy with a deagle helps. Never run straight in CS when you are in a sniper alley :)

Learn the maps, learn to shoot in short bursts, be accurate, listen, and don't go charging off. We'll make CS players out of you all yet!:D ;)

I've always hated Steam, but never actually used it. As flakey as it seems to be, I just don't like the notion of Steam. Giving Valve admin rights to download and install stuff on my PC is just never going to happen. I wouldn't give a reputable company that chance, and I certainly wouldn't give it to Valve considering all their "accidental" Steam releases and serious security concerns.

Steam is the reason I won't be buying HL2, which is a shame as I expect it to be a really good game. I also abandoned Day of Defeat (amazing WWII mod for HL) for the same reason.

PS. a "steam sucks" search in Google returns 83,000+ hits.

In all fairness steam is not that bad, and it certainly is no different to the agreements you sign when you play MMORPGs.

In terms of game matching and online games playing, Steam is actually very good. Far better than the crock of poo that calls itself Gamespy.

I did have troubles with it intially, but it has been ok since.

The reason why I said that it screws up your offline games, because it used to hang if it was having trouble connecting and would then never bring up the offline option. They most probably have resolved this now, I certainly having had Steam hang in a long time.

hehehe, count me in to the clan idea.
But only once counter strike source is finaly out!
After playing the beta, i doubt ill ever be able to go back to the original! (for graphics reasons only mind!.) those older graphics hurt my eyes.

I have a question, will HL2 only be playable over steam?

If someone puts up an AVforums server then I will quite happily play on it :)

Can make it a sticky too, not too sure we could get funding for renting a server, unless there was a benefit to it all :)

Never really had any problems with steam, and in fact it saved my arse when my copy of half life & cd-key disappeared, just downloaded steam onto newly rebuilt pc, typed in e-mail and password, and lo and behold 30 minutes later, fully working counter-strike installation.

Are there or will there be any competitions for CS Source? If theres a financial goal, then someone might put up the money for a server.
