'Static' sound from optical out to amp when using WinDVD 6 Platinum

For some wierd reason, when I use WinDVD 6 Platinum to play back DVDs, I get a static-like sound from my amp when using the SP/DIF output option in WinDVD. Changing to analog seems to be fine, but obviously only works in stereo mode. I want WinDVD to output a digital signal, so that my amp can decode it. I'm using a USB to optical out adapter bought from Maplins. Other audio, such as music played back in iTunes or video clips played using Windows Media Player works fine. The only thing that springs to mind is that as the device is USB 1.1, it doesn't have enough bandwidth to chuck out a DVD quality signal and hence is causing the issue. Has anyone any ideas?
