Is it me or is the news coverage of the Iraq crisis remarkably similar to the way the war is reported in the film "Starship Troopers".....scary....

Good point well made. It just makes me think of Starship Troopers everytime I see that link on the war on Sky News with all the explosions.

Ok, ok, so it's not exactly the same language used. I was talking more about the style it is presented to us in. The way we are fed with information in a similar manner and graphics used

I havent seen it, but FOX News network apparantly has a graphic of a Bald Eagle flying towards the screen with missles shooting out of it's wings. Now that isn't Starship Troopers I know, but is the product of a "great" imagination

The U.S. coverage is. I was watching a clip the other day from U.S. TV and thought the whole thing was a parody for a short while. The use of music/dramatic commentary is so OTT.

I tend to watch BBC news for 30mins then switch over to FOX for some light hearted entertainment.

My fave FOX quote so far

Discussing the "Rules of War" in a special sub-segment after POW's suspected to be killed -

"So then xxxxxxx can these lowdown goofball Iraqi's be tried for warcrimes?"

Quite how they manage to get away with such an unbiased and politically correct news channel is beyond me.

a little off topic maybe, but does anyone know if sales of Conflict Desert Storm (XBox, PS2, PC) gone up in the last week?

the local video shop has five copies and they have been out solidly for the last week. maybe players think the news coverage is just a really good "cut scene"?

I don't know about this, but I have noticed an absolute load of advertising in the papers for things like those Book Clubs who are promoting all the Andy McNab novels, and those collectables companies who normally sell those novelty figurines, who are now just advertising collectable model planes used over the years in conflict.

Wars being used for financial gains....brilliant....

It was reported yesterday that the US military now treats all Iraqis as 'hostile' (that was after they fail to rejoice being liberated).

True, and that's why the French didn't want us to do it. It's going to cost them a lot of money in the preferential oil contracts they will lose when Bush "rebuilds" Iraq.

Also, wasn't the war about Iraq's harbouring/aiding terrorism? I wonder if they have found any evidence of that yet.

Still, we should support Our Boys out there doing their jobs. My hat goes off to them, and I am not being sarcastic there  , it's just a shame they have to watch their backs in case the Americans shoot them as well as the Iraqi's!!!

I though that with this conflict it was more about hidden weapons of mass destruction...you know...like the scud missiles that were fired at coalition forces the other day...the ones that Saddam did not have.

I for one will be very surprised if this conflict does not involve the Iraqi use of chem/bio weapons. It's quite posible to hide something in a place the size of a country like Iraq.

It's no doubt also about America getting cheap oil :D

I think that the Americans and perhaps us are hoping Iraq will use chemical/biological weapons or "Dubya-Em-Dee" as the Whitehouse like to call them, because if they do the rest of the world will unite (hopefully) and send in some more troops (maybe).
But Sadam in my opinion isn't that stupid, it is in his best interests to act like the victim.

Oh and back to the original topic, yes it does feel very Starship Troopers/over the top news, its just a shame they run the same news over and over again and show the same clips of warefare that happened days ago, they almost seem to portray these repeated clips as new.

this frontline digital camera footage that the US troops are shooting is a horrible idea. You know the news networks are justing praying for someone to get blown away on camera, they'd play that footage until it wore out!:(

On a note, there have been no confirmed SCUD launchings, that was someone telling porkies. All the patriots have shot down have been Il-Samoud 2's and some other missiles.

Seeing as Starship Stroopers was a 'sci-fi satire' on U.S. culture/media then obviously there are going to be similarities

The war spin doctors have invented a new term. I was looking at teletext this morning and apparently the troops are attacking the Republican Guard in an effort to "degrade" them.

The great British public are presumed to be too stupid to understand that "degrade" means "kill" but if it's good enough for BBC and Governement ministries it should be good enough for everyday use.

"When he found that his wife had been having an affair, he lost his temper and degraded her"

"He was driving too fast and degraded a dog that had run out into the road"

its a nonsense yes, if you've read 1984 the similarities between big brother and modern western governments are scary. Except it doesn't seem scary to most people because they are fed it through the TV.
